Twitter has been banned in Nigeria after it deleted a post by the country\u2019s president \u2014 and the government announced the decision on Twitter. <\/p>\n

Twitter has been \u201csuspended indefinitely\u201d in the country, the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Information and Culture wrote in a Friday Twitter thread<\/a>, citing \u201cpersistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria\u2019s corporate existence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The ban comes after Twitter deleted a Tuesday post by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in which he said he would treat \u201cthose misbehaving today\u201d in \u201cthe language they understand\u201d \u2014 interpreted<\/a> as a threat of violence against a secessionist movement in the country. Twitter said the tweet violated its \u201cabusive behavior\u201d policy.<\/p>\n

Residents of Africa\u2019s most populous country who try to use virtual private networks \u2014 or VPNs \u2014 to get around the ban will be prosecuted, CNN reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In response, Twitter said<\/a> that it was \u201cdeeply concerned by the blocking of Twitter in Nigeria\u201d and pledged to \u201crestore access for all those in Nigeria who rely on Twitter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Amnesty International condemned the ban, calling on the Nigerian government to \u201creverse the unlawful suspension and other plans to gag the media, repress the civic space, and undermine Nigerians\u2019 human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Buhari\u2019s individual tweet in question was deleted, the president\u2019s account with 4.1 million followers remained online as of Monday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Buhari\u2019s full deleted tweet read: \u201cMany of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buhari served in the 1967-1970 Nigerian Civil War, which killed an estimated one million people. In recent months, his government has accused secessionist groups of attacking police and government buildings.\u00a0\n <\/p><\/div>\n
