ROUEN, France, June 8 \u2013 In a break from his job teaching engineering to students in France\u2019s Normandy region, Matthieu Pluvinage put the finishing touches on an\u00a0application\u00a0for a new job:\u00a0astronaut.<\/p>\n

Pluvinage, 38, is taking advantage of a European Space Agency initiative to run an open recruitment drive for new\u00a0astronauts for its manned flight program.<\/p>\n

While he has never been a test pilot or served in the military \u2013 typical credentials for\u00a0astronauts in the past \u2013 he ticks many of the boxes in the job description.<\/p>\n

He has a masters degree in science<\/a>, he speaks English and\u00a0French, he reckons he is fit enough to pass the medical and he has a passion for space.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are things that make me think, \u2018I want to do this! It\u2019s cool!\u2019,\u201d said Pluvinage in his office at the ESIGELEC engineering school near Rouen, 90 miles west of Paris, where he teaches.<\/p>\n

Pluvinage has a collection of books about Thomas Pesquet, the space engineer and airline pilot who this year became the first\u00a0French\u00a0commander of the International Space Station.<\/p>\n

Displayed on a computer monitor was his job\u00a0application, still being drafted. He has until June 18 to submit it and will know the result in October.<\/p>\n

The odds are long. He has not yet even entered the recruitment process. Competition will be stiff. To succeed, Pluvinage will need to get through six selection rounds.<\/p>\n

But he said he decided to take the risk because the next time the space agency puts out an open call for new\u00a0astronauts, likely to be years from now, he may be too old.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter the result, if I don\u2019t try it, I will have regrets for the rest of my life,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
