Dominic Williams, the founder of Dfinity and its Internet Computer, has slammed the scaling solutions put forward by Polkadot and Ethereum for offering a disjointed user experience.<\/p>\n

The self-described \u201cblockchain maximalist\u201d criticized Ethereum\u2019s burgeoning ecosystem of second-layer scaling solutions, describing Ethereum as starting to resembling a ridiculously elaborate \u201cRube Goldberg machine<\/a>\u201d of \u201clayer-two cloud app<\/a>lications.\u201d <\/p>\n

Williams asserted layer-twos cause points of friction for Ethereum users and exposes them to counterparty security vulnerabilities, emphasizing that more than half of Ethereum\u2019s nodes are hosted by Amazon Web Services:<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of these Proof of Stake networks today that people invest in are really just layer-two applications of cloud \u2014 we find that pretty disappointing. Blockchain shouldn\u2019t be running on Amazon Web Services where they can steal the validator keys and do all sorts of bad stuff.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Williams asserts that when a user accesses a blockchain through the cloud, \u201cthey have to download MetaMask from Amazon or something that lets them be tracked.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He sought to contrast this with Dfinity\u2019s Internet Identity protocol that he claims \u201ccan\u2019t track you\u201d unlike MetaMask and many other services downloaded from an app store.<\/p>\n

Dfinity\u2019s founder emphasized the numerous friction-points and steep learning curve impacting the user experience on Ethereum, stating: \u201cIf you want mass adoption of blockchain, you can\u2019t require people to install MetaMask and then have to buy some Ether from Coinbase \u2014 that\u2019s ridiculous. People need to interact with blockchain without having tokens \u2014 tokens come later. That\u2019s a really big problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOn a traditional blockchain, you\u2019re sort of fiddling around creating these transactions through MetaMask or something like that \u2014 that\u2019s just not a good user experience.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Williams also took aim at Polkadot\u2019s forthcoming sharded parachain ecosystem, likening its relay chain to a \u201ccentralized toll-fee hub\u201d media<\/a>ting between disparate blockchains. He also criticized its vision for sharding as failing to ensure \u201cfungibility between smart contracts.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cDeFi is so successful on Ethereum […] because these smart contracts exist in a seamless universe and they can all plug into each other \u2014 everybody can extend everybody else\u2019s system,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Since its discreet mainnet launch in December 2020, Williams claims Dfinity has been poorly understood by the broader crypto community and the subject of rampant FUD on social media, lamenting that poor marketing from the project has done little to fix the situation.<\/p>\n

Despite the purported FUD-storm, Williams asserts \u201cthe Internet Computer will have more users than all other blockchains combined by December of this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
