“#New dinosaur species discovered in Australia<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Scientists have confirmed the discovery of a new dinosaur species in Australia, one of the largest found in the world, more than a decade after cattle farmers first uncovered bones of the animal.<\/p>\n

The plant-eating sauropod lived in the Cretaceous period between 92 million and 96 million years ago when\u00a0Australia\u00a0was attached to Antartica, according to a research paper published on Monday.<\/a><\/p>\n

Paleontologists estimated the\u00a0dinosaur\u00a0reached a height of 5-6.5 meters at the hip and 25-30 meters in length, making it as long as a basketball court and as tall as a two story building.<\/p>\n

That makes the\u00a0new\u00a0species\u00a0the largest\u00a0dinosaur\u00a0ever found in\u00a0Australia\u00a0and puts it in the top five in the world, joining an elite group of titanosaurs previously only\u00a0discovered\u00a0in South America.<\/p>\n

\u201cDiscoveries like this are just the tip of the iceberg,\u201d said Queensland Museum curator and palaeontologist Scott Hocknull.<\/p>\n

Paleontologists have named the sauropod \u201cAustralotitan cooperensis\u201d, combining \u201csouthern titan\u201d with the name of a creek near where the first of the creature\u2019s bones were found in 2006 on a cattle farming property in Eromanga in Queensland state.<\/p>\n

The confirmation of the\u00a0new\u00a0species\u00a0marks a seventeen-year long journey to first unearth and then compare the bones of \u201cCooper\u201d, as the\u00a0dinosaur\u00a0is more informally known, to other finds.<\/p>\n

Dinosaur\u00a0bones are enormous, heavy and fragile, and are kept in museums around the world, making scientific study difficult.<\/p>\n

The team from the Eromanga Natural History Museum and the Queensland Museum used\u00a0new\u00a0digital technology<\/a> for the first time to 3-D scan each bone\u00a0for comparisons.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo make sure Australotitan was a different\u00a0species, we needed to compare its bones to the bones of other\u00a0species\u00a0from Queensland and globally,\u201d Hocknull said. \u201cThis was a very long and painstaking task.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robyn Mackenzie, who was mustering cattle with her husband Stuart on their property when they\u00a0discovered\u00a0the bones, founded the Eromanga Natural History Museum to house the find.<\/p>\n

A swath of further discoveries of\u00a0dinosaur\u00a0skeletons in the area, along with a rock-shelf believed to have been a sauropod pathway, are still awaiting full scientific study.<\/p>\n

\u201cPalaeo Tourism has been huge globally so we\u2019re expecting a lot of international interest when our borders re-open,\u201d said Mackenzie, now a field paleontologist.<\/p>\n

Hocknull said even larger\u00a0dinosaur\u00a0specimens are waiting to be\u00a0discovered, given the plant-eating sauropods were general<\/a>ly preyed on by huge theropods.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve found a couple of small theropod\u00a0dinosaurs in\u00a0Australia\u00a0\u2026 but it wouldn\u2019t have bothered Australotitan, which suggests there is a very large predatory\u00a0dinosaur\u00a0out there somewhere. We just haven\u2019t found it yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
