A huge spike in violent crime has left our city streets covered with bullet casings and awash with the blood of innocent bystanders \u2014 including children caught in the crossfire of gangbangers. As if the state of public safety in Gotham and New York state weren\u2019t bad enough, Albany leftists are pushing to tip the balance even further in favor of criminals and against law enforcers, victims, taxpayers and law-abiding residents.<\/p>\n

To understand this troubling turn of events, we have to return to the pre-COVID era. In 2019, one party came into control of all levers of state government, with Democrats taking charge of the state Senate, the Assembly and the governor\u2019s office. That dramatic shift in the balance of power was quickly followed by a dramatic leftward shift in policy coming out of the capital.<\/p>\n

The state Legislature set out to enact the agenda of a small group of ultra-progressive New Yorkers, and rather than restrain lawmakers\u2019 radical impulses, Gov. Andrew Cuomo went along at most every turn, more concerned with his own grip on power than the safety of New Yorkers.<\/p>\n

The results weren\u2019t surprising: Inflammatory anti-police rhetoric, combined with policies that prioritize criminals over victims and hardworking New Yorkers, have emboldened evildoers and put public safety in communities throughout the state in jeopardy \u2014 and not just in the Big App<\/a>le.<\/p>\n

The disturbing trend started with Democrats\u2019 misguided bail and discovery transformation. Progressives in Albany ushered in these so-called criminal-justice reforms while ignoring the warning cries of not just their Republican colleagues, but also law-enforcement officials, judges and district attorneys. Nearly everyone involved in the system \u2014 except, that is, hard-left activists \u2014 warned that removing judges\u2019 discretion in determining pretrial detention would yield catastrophe on the streets.<\/p>\n

The soft-on-crime approach has resulted in a revolving door in the criminal-justice system. Every day, we see reports of brazen attacks in broad daylight, committed by perpetrators with multiple previous arrests for similar offenses who were nevertheless free to victimize more innocents.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s worse to come: In spite of the increase in violent crimes in every part of the state, Democrats have resolved to enact\u00a0even more<\/em>\u00a0laws that prioritize criminals and further endanger public safety.<\/p>\n

The proposed measures include a misguided \u201cclean-slate\u201d bill that would automatically wipe away criminal records for a vast range of serious crimes, including violent offenses. If enacted, a bank owner wouldn\u2019t know if he is hiring a convicted embezzler, and a single mother wouldn\u2019t know if she is moving across the hall from a convicted killer.<\/p>\n

Democrats also wish to massively expand parole eligibility, ignoring the voices of victims and making it\u00a0still-easier\u00a0<\/em>for the state\u2019s most dangerous criminals to get back on the streets, even as we see multiple violent crimes committed by those currently on parole.<\/p>\n

Then there is the so-called Police Accountability Act (note the benevolent names attached to all of these radical measures). The APA attacks those who have taken an oath to protect and serve our communities and are trying to keep skyrocketing crime under control. It would set an absurdly high standard for justified uses of force, which seems designed to discourage cops from intervening when lives are in imminent danger.<\/p>\n

There is a better way. My colleagues in the Senate Republican conference have put forward proposals to support our law-enforcement officials, protect victims\u2019 rights and restore justice and accountability to the out-of-control parole board.<\/p>\n

The rise in crime isn\u2019t a partisan issue, nor should it be. Even the front-runners in the New York City mayoral race have recognized that they are facing a major crime problem. The same is true in communities throughout the Empire State. From large cities to small towns, they have all become less safe. It defies logic to ignore the link between the rise in crime and the drastic shift in policies and rhetoric coming out of Albany.<\/p>\n

I urge all of my Democratic colleagues to join us in our efforts to restore common sense and public safety in the state \u2014 for the good of all New Yorkers.\u00a0<\/p>\n
