\u201cI haven\u2019t been to Europe,\u201d Vice President Kamala Harris actually argued Tuesday in her latest attempt to justify not visiting the US-Mexico border. Well, it makes as much sense as the rest of the Biden-Harris app<\/a>roach to this crisis. <\/p>\n

In Guatemala as part of her assignment to address \u201croot causes\u201d of the border surge, Harris chatted with NBC\u2019s Lester Holt, who asked why she hasn\u2019t visited the border in the 11 weeks since President Joe Biden made her point person on the issue. <\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point, you know, we are going to the border,\u201d Harris said. \u201cWe\u2019ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We\u2019ve been to the border.\u201d<\/p>\n

Holt replied, \u201cYou haven\u2019t been to the border\u201d (as veep); she Harris countered, \u201cAnd I haven\u2019t been to Europe. And I mean, I don\u2019t understand the point that you\u2019re making. I\u2019m not discounting the importance of the border.\u201d<\/p>\n

The point is that she might <\/em>learn something from an on-the-ground view. Surely that\u2019s why she went down to take a look as a US senator during the Trump years. But now she says such trip<\/a>s are just \u201cgrand gestures\u201d?<\/p>\n

Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted nearly 900,000 migrants from Oct. 1, 2020, to May 31 of this year, according to preliminary data obtained by Axios on Monday. Last month alone saw 170,000 apprehended. And the number not <\/em>from Mexico or the Northern Triangle is up to 50,000, five times the level in January.<\/p>\n

What are the \u201croot causes\u201d of the surge?<\/em> <\/p>\n

Ironically, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, who she visited this week, flagged them for CBS on Sunday: When Biden took office, \u201cThe message changed to: \u2018We\u2019re going to reunite families, we\u2019re going to reunite children,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThe very next day, the coyotes were here organizing groups of children to take them to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris mouthed the right words Monday by Giammattei\u2019s side: \u201cI want to be clear to folks in this region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come, do not come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now all she and Biden have to do is change all the policies<\/em> that send the reverse message. They don\u2019t even have to go to Europe to do it.\n <\/div>\n
