\n Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday once again decried Gotham\u2019s gun violence epidemic without offering any concrete solutions \u2014 while doubling down on the department\u2019s decision to disband its gun-hunting anti-crime unit \u2014 during another press conference attended by no members of NYPD brass.<\/p>\n

The mayor kicked off his daily press briefing by addressing the spate of shootings, including one in Brooklyn Sunday night that claimed the life of a 1-year-old boy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is something that very, very sadly we\u2019ve seen in the past and we\u2019ve had to fight back before and we will fight back again,\u201d de Blasio told reporters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do that by bringing police and community together in a common cause,\u201d he added, while urging the community to \u201coccupy the corners\u201d of their neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Later, de Blasio talked about the \u201chorrible spate of shootings\u201d in NYCHA public housing that he dealt with at the beginning of his tenure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe threw everything we had at it. We have to do it again,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He shot down questions about firing Police Commissioner Dermot Shea \u2014 who disbanded the anti-crime unit last month \u2014 and lauded him as \u201cone of the people who made this the safest big city in America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe felt \u2014 and I agreed with him \u2014 that it was important to make a change in our strategy, to use the talents of our officers in new and better ways,\u201d de Blasio said. \u201cI don\u2019t know anyone who knows more about how to do that than Dermot Shea.\u201d<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s top cop and other brass, however, have been markedly absent from de Blasio\u2019s daily press briefings \u2014 even as shootings continue to surge this summer. On Monday alone, 17 people were\u00a0shot in the city, while last month was the most violent June the Big App<\/a>le has seen since 1996.<\/p>\n

But de Blasio blamed the spike in crime in part on the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery aspect of life has been dislocated,\u201d he said. \u201cC\u2019mon, we\u2019re not dealing with business as usual here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor\u2019s comments on the crime spree counter those from the NYPD\u2019s Chief of Department Terence Monahan, who on Tuesday blamed it on nixing the anti-crime unit and the rise of the Defund the Police movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe disbanding of anti-crime obviously has a huge effect,\u201d Monahan said on 1010 WINS radio, ahead of de Blasio\u2019s press conference. \u201cThose are our best cops out on the street, grabbing guns. So, there\u2019s a feeling that it\u2019s safe to carry a gun on the street. So, we are looking for ways to change that mentality out on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio acknowledged anti-cop sentiments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve also experienced a lot of negative feelings directed at them,\u201d he said. \u201cI wish more people who wanted reform would remember you\u2019ve got to also remember the human beings who are doing the work and protecting us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, new data shows the effect dissolving the anti-crime unit has had on gun-charge arrests.<\/p>\n

Between June 15 and July 12, police collared 89 people on gun charges \u2014 down from 270 last year during the same period. The NYPD logged 321 arrests between May 18 and June 14, up from 287 last year.<\/p>\n

Arrests plummeted by 67 percent, with gun charges cut in half, during the 28-day span starting on June 15 \u2014 the same day the unit was disbanded \u2014 through July 12.<\/p>\n

Gun arrests were up more than 11 percent for the month and up 8 percent for the year in the weeks before the unit was removed.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
