Our first step is to obtain the Google Chrome \u201c.deb\u201d file. There were no unmet dependencies using this release.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt -f install<\/pre>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Updating_Google_Chrome\"><\/span>Updating Google Chrome<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When a new release of Google Chrome is available, your installation of Chrome will try to update itself. If it cannot succeed, it will display a message telling you that it tried to upgrade but couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you run Ubuntu\u2019s standard Software Updater tool, it will update Google Chrome, along with the other applications on your system. This works because the Software Updater tool checks for updates in all of your system\u2019s configured software repositories\u2014including the Google repository that Chrome adds when you install it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you experience a problem with the graphical update process\u2014or if you just prefer the terminal\u2014you can update Google Chrome from the command line.<\/p>\n<p>Google Chrome adds a repository to the list of repositories that the\u00a0<code>apt<\/code>\u00a0command checks when it\u2019s looking for installation files. So, although Ubuntu doesn\u2019t have Google Chrome in any of the standard Ubuntu repositories, you can still use <code>apt<\/code> to upgrade Chrome.<\/p>\n<p>The command to use is:<\/p>\n<pre>sudo apt install google-chrome-stable<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-731820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/13-2.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"55\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This will try to install Google Chrome. The <code>apt<\/code> command will realize that Chrome is already installed. It will check the version that\u2019s available in the repository and the version installed on your computer. If the version in the repository is newer than the version on your computer, the newer version will be installed for you.<\/p>\n<p>If you run this command shortly after you\u2019ve installed Google Chrome, the version in the repository and the version on your computer will be the same, so nothing will happen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-731823\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/14-4.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"165\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In this case, <code>apt<\/code> reports that the version on the computer is already the newest available. No changes are made, and nothing is upgraded or installed.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Chrome_Everywhere\"><\/span>Google Chrome Everywhere<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Ubuntu ships with the Firefox web browser as standard, and there\u2019s nothing wrong with that. Firefox is a great and capable browser\u2014and it\u2019s open-source, too. But perhaps you use Google Chrome on other platforms and want to have the same experience on Ubuntu.
