\n NBCUniversal\u2019s Peacock streaming service is set to launch Wednesday, and it\u2019s facing more than a few hurdles.<\/p>\n

The new video platform is banking on a cheap price that\u2019s supported by ads as well as a catalog of shows like \u201c30 Rock\u201d and \u201cThe Office.\u201d But it joins an already crowded landscape with well-established rivals like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Disney .<\/p>\n

Peacock is also debuting without its main draw, the Tokyo summer Olympics, which were postponed until 2021. Production of a slew of original shows has likewise been frozen by the pandemic.\u00a0And so far, the service won\u2019t be available on the nation\u2019s two largest streaming players, Roku and Amazon Fire TV.<\/p>\n

The service did, however, ink a last-minute deal with Sony on Tuesday to stream it on PlayStation 4 consoles starting the week of July 20.<\/p>\n

Peacock will have three tiers: a limited one that\u2019s free, an all-inclusive one that\u2019s $4.99 a month with ads and an all-inclusive one that\u2019s $9.99 a month without ads. It will launch with about 20,000 hours of programming.<\/p>\n

Rival Disney charges $6.99 a month, while Netflix charges $12.99 a month for its most popular standard plan. HBOMax, which includes movies<\/a> and shows from WarnerMedia<\/a>-owned channels HBO, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, charges $14.99 a month.<\/p>\n

Consumers who opt for Peacock\u2019s free version will have limited access to the service\u2019s library, about 7,500 hours of programming, and they will have to watch ads.<\/p>\n

Other than its stable of popular shows like \u201cEverybody Loves Raymond\u201d and \u201cTwo and a Half Men,\u201d Peacock is bringing to market big-budget original programming, such as \u201cBrave New World,\u201d its marquee sci-fi drama adapted from Aldous Huxley\u2019s novel, starring Alden Ehrenreich and Demi Moore.<\/p>\n

The service also offers a host of movies, news<\/a>, sports and skit-style clips, from NBC properties and its Hollywood studio, Universal Pictures.<\/p>\n

The company said it planned to launch with more original programming, such as reboots of \u201cSaved by The Bell\u201d and \u201cPunky Brewster,\u201d which may debut later in the year.<\/p>\n

Matt Strauss, chairman of Peacock, said at a Peacock preview of presentation in April that the service \u201cwon\u2019t hit its stride until 2021\u201d due to coronavirus-related production delays.<\/p>\n

Critics say Peacock has long road before it becomes a strong streaming competitor and a meaningful contributor to Comcast\u2019s overall business.<\/p>\n

Calling Peacock a \u201cside show for the next few years,\u201d MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett said the streaming service \u201cisn\u2019t even key to what happ<\/a>ens at NBCU.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comcast is driven by NBCUniversal\u2019s cable networks and its namesake cable TV business \u2014 both of which have been bleeding subscribers as cord-cutting accelerates.<\/p>\n

For the foreseeable future \u201cwhat matters most, of course is cable,\u201d Moffett said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
