ROME, June 10 \u2013 Italian epic poet Dante is going to heaven \u2013 again.<\/p>\n

Dante, Italy\u2019s greatest poet, divided his monumental\u00a0Divine\u00a0Comedy\u00a0into three parts \u2013 Hell, Purgatory and Paradise. The allegory representing a soul\u2019s journey to God is one of the world\u2019s most influential works of literature.<\/p>\n

Now, a copy of the entire\u00a0Divine\u00a0Comedy, micro-inscribed on sheets of a titanium and gold alloy, will be sent up into space and left there to\u00a0float\u00a0in the heavens\u00a0among\u00a0the\u00a0stars\u00a0that Dante wrote about.<\/p>\n

The last word in each of the three parts is \u201cstelle\u201d (stars), including the famous final line which defines God as \u201cThe love that moves the sun and the other\u00a0stars\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knew there would be many special editions of the\u00a0Divine\u00a0Comedy\u00a0coming out for this year\u2019 700th anniversary of his death and we wanted to do something totally different,\u201d said Giorgio Amaroli, head of Script<\/a>a Maneant, a high-end art publishing house based in Bologna.<\/p>\n

Dante Alighieri, often referred to as the \u201cSupreme Poet\u201d, lived in the Republic of Florence and his writings helped establish Tuscan as the standardised Italian language. He was exiled for political reasons and died in Ravenna in 1321.<\/p>\n

For the space project, two sheets measuring about 11 X 17 inches and folded in four, accordion style, will each be inscribed with the entire poem of some 14,200 lines containing about 32,000 words.<\/p>\n

They will be sent up on a Soyuz mission from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to the International Space Station in the autumn. One will be released in space. The other will be signed by the astronauts and returned to earth in 2022.<\/p>\n

A facsimile of the second sheet will be made part of a traditional large format printed version of the\u00a0Comedy\u00a0and sold as a limited numbered edition of 700 copies, for the number of years since Dante died.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Soyuz people told us that a paper version would not last long in space and so they suggested the titanium and gold alloy\u201d Amaroli said, adding that a prototype had been sent to Kazakhstan for inspection.<\/p>\n

Amaroli got the inspiration for the project from Canto 22 of Paradise, when Dante is\u00a0among\u00a0the vastness of the spheres of heaven and the planets, looks down at earth and is taken aback by its smallness.<\/p>\n

The special delivery into space will cost the publishing company more than $182,570 and the books will cost about $7,302 each, Amaroli said.<\/p>\n

The publishing house is no stranger to spectacular, high-end projects. In 2017, it worked with the Vatican Museums on an extra-large three-volume set that reproduced Michelangelo\u2019s Sistine Ceiling frescoes in 1:1 scale.<\/p>\n

The Dante book is a steal by comparison. The Sistine set cost $1,825.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
