Jeffrey Toobin returned to CNN on Thursday afternoon and admitted that masturbating during a Zoom call \u2014 which got him fired from the New Yorker and led to a leave of absence from the network \u2014 was \u201cdeeply moronic and indefensible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like we should address what\u2019s happ<\/a>ened in the months since we\u2019ve seen you,\u201d CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota said to Toobin, who was the network\u2019s chief legal analyst.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo quote Jay Leno, \u2018What the hell were you thinking?’\u201d<\/p>\n

Toobin, sporting a navy blue suit and a strip<\/a>ed tie, responded by saying the masturbatory conduct was \u201cdeeply moronic and indefensible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think other people could see me,\u201d he told Camerota on \u201cCNN News<\/a>room\u201d but agreed that it was no defense for his actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI have tried, and I am trying now, to say how sorry I am, sincerely, in all seriousness. Above all, I am sorry to my wife and to my family but I am also sorry to the people on the Zoom call, I\u2019m sorry to my former colleagues at the New Yorker, I\u2019m sorry to my current, fortunately, still colleagues at CNN and I\u2019m sorry to the people who read my work and who watched me on CNN and who thought I was a better person than this.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

In October, the Harvard alum was caught pleasuring himself during an election simulation Zoom call with some of the magazine\u2019s biggest names.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Following a three-week probe, the New Yorker\u2019s parent company Cond\u00e9 Nast announced he was getting the boot after 27 years as a staff writer and he also went on leave from CNN.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Toobin told Camerota on Thursday he felt the glossy\u2019s punishment was \u201cexcessive\u201d and he\u2019s \u201cincredibly grateful to CNN for taking me back.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying to become the kind of person people can trust again,\u201d Toobin said.\u00a0\u201cI am a flawed human being that makes mistakes\u2026 It was wrong, it was stupid and I\u2019m trying to be a better person.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said the last seven months have been \u201cmiserable\u201d but he\u2019s spent the time trying to make himself a better person by going to therapy, doing public service, working at a food bank and penning a new book.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The network\u2019s chief media<\/a> correspondent Brian Stelter reported that Toobin had asked CNN for some time off to deal \u201cwith a personal issue,\u201d which the network granted. That time off then turned into a leave of absence that evidently ended eight months later on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Citing a CNN spokesperson, Stelter reported Toobin will be back on CNN regularly<\/a> as a chief legal analyst, despite the flagrant misconduct he exhibited at the New Yorker.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Stelter wrote that some anchors and hosts at CNN \u201cexpressed a desire to have Toobin back on their shows, since he has been a leading legal voice on television for decades.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Aside from discussions about the masturbation incident, Camerota spoke with\u00a0Toobin about a legal case out of California before the segment was wrapped. <\/p>\n
