{"id":271554,"date":"2021-06-10T23:03:20","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T20:03:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/what-does-it-mean-for-crypto\/"},"modified":"2021-06-10T23:03:20","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T20:03:20","slug":"what-does-it-mean-for-crypto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/what-does-it-mean-for-crypto\/","title":{"rendered":"#What does it mean for crypto?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#What does it mean for crypto?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>LONDON, June 10 \u2013\u00a0El\u00a0Salvador\u00a0has become the first country in the world to adopt\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0as legal tender, with President Nayib Bukele touting its use for its potential to help\u00a0Salvadorans living abroad to send remittances back home.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what the move means for\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0as a mainstream currency \u2013 and emerging markets such as\u00a0El\u00a0Salvador:<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the law say? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>El\u00a0Salvador\u2019s law means\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0will have equal footing with the dollar, which became its official currency 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Making\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0\u201clegal tender\u201d means shops and businesses must accept it for goods and services, and they can choose to express prices in the currency.<\/p>\n<p>Taxes can also be paid using\u00a0bitcoin, though its use will be optional.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So bitcoin will be used like dollars?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s too soon to tell.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin\u2019s value has fluctuated wildly through its 12-year life, with regular daily double digit price moves rendering it impractical for commerce.<\/p>\n<p>It remains little used for buying goods and services across the world, despite a growing number of major companies accepting it as payment.<\/p>\n<p>El\u00a0Salvador\u00a0said the\u00a0bitcoin-dollar exchange rate will be set by markets. Financial regulators and law enforcement worldwide are debating the status of cryptocurrencies, and how they should be regulated.<\/p>\n<p>The jury is still out on whether the introduction of\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0to\u00a0El\u00a0Salvador\u00a0will see it become more a transaction mechanism or take over the function of a currency in its own right.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is it the start of a wider trend?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In theory,\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0offers a quick and cheap way to send money across borders without relying on traditional financial firms such as banks and remittance companies.<\/p>\n<p>Backers say it could catch on in emerging markets particularly, where people lack access to traditional financial services and have to pay costly fees for sending and receiving money.<\/p>\n<p>Yet converting\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0to and from local currencies in such economies tends to rely on informal brokers, requires know-how and is fraught with risk of scams and price fluctuations.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say it is too soon to tell whether\u00a0El\u00a0Salvador\u2019s move would start a wider trend of\u00a0bitcoin\u00a0adoption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will it play out in emerging markets?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>El\u00a0Salvador\u2019s experiment will provide the first opportunity for analysts to gauge the cryptocurrency impact on an economy.<\/p>\n<p>Some warn the increased usage of cryptocurrencies will reduce the effectiveness of monetary policy.<\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0El\u00a0Salvador\u00a0is already using the greenback as its legal tender, other emerging economies who are on the cusp of dollarisation might find cryptocurrency use can amplify this, dampening the ability of central banks to act as lender of last resort.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation is also in focus.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin\u00a0\u2013 like many other cryptocurrencies \u2013 has limited supply designed to mitigate inflationary effects.
