\nIs \u201cThe Jinx\u201d trying to press his luck??<\/p>\n

If you aren\u2019t familiar with the case of\u00a0Robert Durst<\/strong>, well, have we got a documentary miniseries<\/a> and\u00a0Ryan Gosling<\/strong> movie to recommend to you!<\/p>\n

In short, the real estate heir has been connected to multiple disapp<\/a>earances and murders over the years. His first wife, Kathleen McCormack<\/strong>, disappeared in 1982 \u2014 a mystery which remains unsolved. In 2000, the friend who had provided him an alibi for Kathleen\u2019s disappearance,\u00a0Susan Berman<\/strong>, was found shot in the head, execution-style.<\/p>\n

In 2001, Durst was arrested and charged with the murder of his elderly neighbor, a man named\u00a0Morris Black<\/strong>. Durst admitted to dismembering and disposing of Black\u2019s body but claimed the killing was in self defense. Somehow the jury bought all that, along with a legal defense which leaned heavily on Durst having Asperger\u2019s syndrome, which they explained his otherwise\u00a0incredibly suspicious, even murderer-like<\/em> behavior. He was acquitted, pleading guilty to\u00a0tampering with evidence<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After seeing the film\u00a0All Good Things<\/em>, which was inspired by his case, Durst agreed to be interviewed for what became the 2015 HBO<\/strong> documentary The Jinx<\/em>. Infamously, he was recorded on a hot mic while on a restroom break, saying to himself:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Shortly after, Durst was arrested again and officially charged with the murder of Susan Berman, apparently thanks to new evidence apart<\/em> from his apparent confession.<\/p>\n

OK, so that brings us to the present\u2026<\/p>\n

The murder trial only just resumed last month after an extended delay due to the pandemic. And it\u2019s already facing yet another delay.<\/p>\n

Durst did not show up on Thursday; Judge Mark E. Windham<\/strong> explained to the court:<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Durst is not here. We understand he is in the jail hospital because of some incident this morning involving his health.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The jury was sent home, with the trial set to resume on Monday.<\/p>\n

Apparently the defense is trying to get the trial postponed indefinitely, citing Durst\u2019s bladder cancer diagnosis (he has appeared in a wheelchair throughout all his court proceedings).<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Law & Crime<\/em>, Deputy District Attorney John Lewin<\/strong> took issue with the motion, telling the court:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I have no idea whether this is legitimate or not, but obviously, given his history, it is certainly suspect as to what his actual condition is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lewin also told the judge sources inside the prison claims that Durst had told them he planned to \u201cfake dementia\u201d and \u201csecure a mistrial due to COVID-19.\u201d The prosecutor commented:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very clear that the defense and the defendant want this trial to go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ultimately the judge said he had to \u201ctrust the doctors\u201d in this case, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be brought to court if he\u2019s good for court in the doctor\u2019s opinion at the jail, and he will not be brought to court if he\u2019s too ill for court. And I trust that judgment also.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But is Durst faking all of it? Is he really planning on\u00a0faking dementia<\/em>?? The thing is, after everything we\u2019ve learned about him over the years, it\u2019s hard to just take the man at his word.<\/p>\n
