Daniel Lawrence Taylor, the British creator\/star of time-travel romp \u201cTimewasters,\u201d was inspired by the fact that most period dramas have homogenous casts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the important things about \u2018Timewasters\u2019 is that you very rarely get to see black people in period pieces. And that was very exciting to me \u2014 to write myself and other young black actors as well, and to create that and put us all onscreen together,\u201d Taylor told The Post from his home in London.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Premiering Friday (June 11), the half-hour comedy originally aired on ITV2 in the UK and has landed here on IMDb TV (Amazon\u2019s free streamer).\u00a0Set in London, the series<\/a> follows four friends in a jazz quartet who discover an elevator that magically brings them from the present day back to the 1920s. There, they find that members of high society embrace them, since jazz is all the rage.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the time [that I created the show] I was learning to play the trumpet randomly \u2014 and I thought, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be cool to make a jazz band?\u2019 And also, at the time there were quite a lot of shows in Britain like \u2018The Inbetweeners\u2019 and \u2018Drifters\u2019 about a group of friends going around doing crazy stuff,\u201d said Taylor. \u201cSo, I thought, \u2018Wouldn\u2019t it be cool if it was an all-black [friend] show\u2026Time travel added a whole new layer to allow me to be a bit satirical and push the boundaries, which I\u2019ve always enjoyed doing in my comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor, who has also been on \u201cTracey Ullman\u2019s Show,\u201d said that he put a personal touch into \u201cTimewasters.\u201d The jazz quartet is made up of Nick (Taylor), Jason (Kadiff Kirwan), Lauren (Adelayo Adedayo), and Horace (Samson Kayo).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the characters are named after my siblings,\u201d he said. \u201cObviously everyone finds their own family funny, but I do find mine quite funny. The only one that\u2019s not named after one of my siblings is Horace. And the only reason for that was is for one joke that ended up getting cut. So, my brother Dominic is not happ<\/a>y about that. But I told him that [Horace\u2019s] middle name is Dominic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although this is the first show that Taylor has both created and starred in, balancing duties in front of and behind the camera wasn\u2019t hard, he said \u2014 though it did present some challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI like both elements because they work to different sides of the brain. But it\u2019s always quite tricky to write something and know that you\u2019re going to be performing it later,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s one [scene] where I get completely naked. And I just remember writing it going, \u2018Why on earth am I writing this knowing that I\u2019m going to have to get naked?\u2019 And then I think, \u2018It\u2019s fine; before we do that I\u2019ll work out and look great!\u2019 And obviously you don\u2019t do those things.\u00a0<\/p>\n
