As President Biden visits foreign leaders in Europe, Vice President Kamala Harris cannot escape the pressure to visit the southern border amid the historic surge of illegal immigration under her watch as border czar.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Univision on Thursday, Harris offered a tense response after being pressed by anchor Ilia Calder\u00f3n on when she would finally visit the crossing amid the worsening migrant crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve said I\u2019m going to the border,\u201d the vice president replied. \u201cAnd I \u2013\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen are you going to the border, Vice President?\u201d Calder\u00f3n interrupted her to ask.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not finished,\u201d Harris replied with an uncomfortable laugh, raising her finger at the host.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve said I\u2019m going to the border. And also if we are going to deal with the problems at the border, we have to deal with the problems that cause people to go to the border, to flee to the border,\u201d Harris went on.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo my first trip<\/a> as vice president of the United States was to go \u2014 in terms of a foreign trip \u2014 to Guatemala, to be on the ground there to address and to be informed of the root causes why are the people of Guatemala leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you have a date for your trip to the border?\u201d Calder\u00f3n followed up by asking.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will keep you posted,\u201d Harris replied.<\/p>\n

Harris, who visited Guatemala and Mexico this week as part of her first foreign visit in office, was dogged for her entire trip by questions about going to surveil the situation at the US-Mexico border in person.<\/p>\n

Her\u00a0answer to NBC News<\/a>\u2019 Lester Holt\u00a0on the matter has continued to haunt her in the days since.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point, you know, we are going to the border,\u201d a defensive Harris\u00a0told Holt on \u201cToday\u201d<\/a>\u00a0in Guatemala \u2014 1,308 miles away from the US-Mexico crossing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border, we\u2019ve been to the border,\u201d Harris said, to which Holt replied, \u201cYou haven\u2019t been to the border.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris, seeming to laugh at her own joke, responded: \u201cAnd I haven\u2019t been to Europe. And I mean, I don\u2019t understand the point that you\u2019re making. I\u2019m not discounting the importance of the border.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Biden administration\u2019s undoing of former President Donald Trump\u2019s border policies has prompted a flood of Central American and Mexican illegal migrants at the US border, including thousands of unescorted children.<\/p>\n

Central Americans looking for refuge from the Northern Triangle countries \u2014 Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras \u2014 have taken these policy moves, as well as the overwhelmingly more welcoming tone from Democrats, as a sign that Biden is inviting them to cross the border.<\/p>\n

Insisting that the border was\u00a0not facing a crisis, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in early March that the problems the agency faced\u00a0should be blamed\u00a0on the previous administration.<\/p>\n

The data, however, overwhelmingly shows that migrants are flooding the border because they believe Biden will\u00a0welcome them with open arms, with over 170,000 illegal crossings a month.<\/p>\n

As the crisis heated up, Biden tapp<\/a>ed his vice president to address the diplomatic measures related to its \u201croot causes.\u201d However, despite intense pressure, she has yet to visit and surveil the situation for herself.<\/p>\n

Several leaders in Central America and Mexico have come out to blame the Biden administration for the crisis that has been sparked since they took the helm. <\/p>\n

Most recently, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei said on American media<\/a> Wednesday, on the heels of Harris\u2019 trip, that the Democrats\u2019 \u201clukewarm\u201d rhetoric and unwillingness to impose harsher punishments on human smuggling were key factors in the current situation. <\/p>\n

\u201cWell, humanitarian messages were used here by the coyotes in a distorted manner because what they said over there was that they will promote family reunification,\u201d Giammattei explained, appearing to refer to Biden\u2019s messaging on immigration during the campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo the coyotes came and took the children and the teenagers to the United States and the borders were full, not only with people from Guatemala, but with a lot of people from all over,\u201d he told Fox News. \u201cWhich is why our proposal is that messages should be clear.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
