“#How Does ‘Celebrity Dating Game<\/a>’ Stack Up to the Original? Michael Bolton Weighs In<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

To fans of the original Dating Game<\/em>, the new Celebrity Dating Game<\/a><\/em> will look pretty familiar. It\u2019s still one hopeful contestant quizzing three potential (mystery) suitors, looking for a great date. Of course, in the new version, it\u2019s an established celeb doing the quizzing and picking.<\/p>\n

The original, which ran from 1965-99 in various incarnations, did include the likes of Farrah Fawcett, John Ritter and Steven Martin taking part, but that was before each was famous.<\/p>\n

The Celebrity Dating Game<\/em> kicks off on Monday night, hosted by Zooey Deschanel (New Girl<\/em>) and Grammy-winner Michael Bolton (\u201cHow Am I Supposed to Live Without You?\u201d), who also serves as executive producer. And the series<\/a> starts on a high note, with Bachelorette<\/em> star and Dancing With the Stars<\/em> mirror ball champion Hannah Brown as the first celeb looking for love.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re coming on right after The Bachelorette<\/em> so, I think a lot of that audience will enjoy our show in particular,\u201d Charles Wachter, executive producer of The Celebrity Dating Game <\/em>(as well as Holey Moley<\/em> on ABC), tells TV Insider. \u201cWe thought giving the audience someone they\u2019re familiar with would be a fun way to kick off the season.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exec adds that some celebs signed up just for fun while others are seriously seeking a potential partner. \u201cJust like in life, people come to this show with their own expectations,\u201d Watcher points out. \u201cSome are genuinely looking for love.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Celebrity Dating Game<\/em> incorporates many components of the original \u2014 including the humorous interview format, the upbeat Herb Alpert music cues, graphics, and, of course, the couple blowing a kiss to the audience \u2014 this is not<\/em> your grandmother\u2019s Dating Game<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Timed with Pride Month, Celebrity Dating Game<\/em> delivers some episodes that feature gay and bisexual celebrities, including Carson Kressley (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy<\/em>), Margaret Cho (Drop Dead Diva<\/em>) and Demi Burnett (The Bachelor<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\u201cThe funny thing about that is that it wasn\u2019t a big deal,\u201d Wachter says of incorporating LGBTQ+ celebrities. \u201cWe weren\u2019t hyper-aware of it. It didn\u2019t feel risky. It just felt this is someone else who\u2019s looking for love. Margaret and Demi will have mixed panels, but we don\u2019t really point that out. We just do it.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was refreshing in that it wasn\u2019t a statement piece or about having a sense of social<\/a> justice,\u201d Wachter adds. \u201cCarson is fantastic. We wanted to put him on the show because we knew it would be a great episode. We put all our talent through that filter asking, \u2018Would this person be engaging, relatable, funny, and charismatic?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Viewers of the original Dating Game<\/em> will find that the old set and the new one are almost identical, right down to its dividing wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually forget that they can\u2019t all see each other,\u201d says Bolton, who says he can pretty quickly suss out the more genuine contestants. \u201cYou can tell who the players are, who\u2019ve devised the perfect answers, and which ones are sincere about revealing who they are as people. You almost want to say to the celebrity, go for this person \u2014 but you can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Celebrity Dating Game<\/em> set makes room for Bolton and a piano so that the singer can add a bit of levity to the show as he performs some of his greatest hits. He\u2019ll tweak the lyrics to give a clue as to the identity of the celebrity.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving the musical component is great because I get to sing the songs I sing until I get to that parody,\u201d Bolton shares. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy \u2018unlearning\u2019 songs I know so well as I\u2019ve sung them live thousands of times. It\u2019s hard to dig into a line melodically that you\u2019re not used to doing, but some of them ended up being quite easy to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael is a musical chameleon and genius,\u201d raves Wachter. \u201cHe had so much fun working with us on the parody lyrics. He was dead set on delivering a musical performance with a really aggressive wink to the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

The celebrities aren\u2019t told in advance that Bolton will be singing a stylized version of his hits tailored to the stars. \u201cThe reaction is \u2018Oh, my God, Michael Bolton is singing about me!\u2019\u201d Wachter adds.<\/p>\n

As for Deschanel, Wachter says, \u201cWe needed someone with charisma, who could go in and out of the game without stopping the game.\u201d She\u2019s tasked with giving the celebrity the platform to shine, keeping the show moving and talking to Michael. \u201cIt\u2019s a challenging role to keep it simple. Working with Zooey is a blast. We genuinely had a ton of fun doing this show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Airing the series during the summer months is ideal, given the program\u2019s lighthearted nature, says Wachter. And just as in the original series, Celebrity Dating Game<\/em> pushes the envelope with sexual innuendos during the interview segments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat people really remember about The<\/em> Dating Game<\/em> is when people would blush,\u201d Wachter says. \u201cI like the risqu\u00e9 stuff. It\u2019s what you do when you flirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is tricky,\u201d he admits. \u201cYou want to be risqu\u00e9 but you don\u2019t want to go past a certain line. The challenge was making somebody blush, but keeping the show what we want it to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
