{"id":272537,"date":"2021-06-12T00:14:28","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T21:14:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/congress-looks-to-break-up-big-tech-with-bold-new-antitrust-bills\/"},"modified":"2021-06-12T00:14:28","modified_gmt":"2021-06-11T21:14:28","slug":"congress-looks-to-break-up-big-tech-with-bold-new-antitrust-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/congress-looks-to-break-up-big-tech-with-bold-new-antitrust-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"#Congress looks to break up Big Tech with bold new antitrust bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Congress looks to break up Big Tech with bold new antitrust bills<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Congressional lawmakers are targeting tech giants over antitrust concerns \u2014 and the proposed legislation could force them to overhaul or even break up their increasingly dominant business empires.<\/p>\n<p>The package of five antitrust bills introduced by a bipartisan group in Congress on Friday \u2014 aimed at Amazon, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and Google\u2019s parent Alphabet \u2014 would make it harder for the biggest tech platforms to complete mergers and keep them from owning businesses that create conflicts of interest. <\/p>\n<p>Two of the new bills could be particularly tricky for Amazon and Apple to navigate as they both run marketplaces that include their own products or apps that compete with outside sellers that rely on their services. <\/p>\n<p>Called the \u201cEnding Platform Monopolies Act,\u201d sponsored by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash)\u00a0and the \u201cThe American Innovation and Choice Online Act\u201d sponsored by House Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI), the reforms could potentially break up the tech behemoths by cracking down on conflicts of interest between their different business lines.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"Rep. Cicilline would reduce the ability of big tech companies to use their platforms to promote their own goods ahead of those of competitors \u2014 a rule that could slam Apple and Google\u2019s Android software over their app-store policies, and Amazon over its massive third-party marketplace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnregulated tech monopolies have too much power over our economy,\u201d said Cicilline. \u201cThey are in a unique position to pick winners and losers, destroy small businesses, raise prices on consumers, and put folks out of work. Our agenda will level the playing field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Ken Buck (R.\u2013Colo.), the top Republican on the antitrust panel, the legislation \u201cbreaks up Big Tech\u2019s monopoly power to control what Americans see and say online, and fosters an online market that encourages innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/511468366\/content?start_page=1&amp;view_mode&amp;access_key=key-2qzroSQ78i1UH0IT9Neo\" data-auto-height=\"true\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"scribd_511468366\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The other three bills are aimed at curbing mergers that Silicon Valley giants have used to grow and neutralize competition. \u201cThe Platform Competition and Opportunity Act\u201d\u00a0led by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), would ban major online players from buying competitive threats, while \u201cThe Merger Filing Fee Modernization Act\u201d\u00a0led by Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Co) would give enforcement agencies power and resources by requiring higher fees for mergers valued at $1 billion and more. <\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, \u201cThe Augmenting Compatibility and Competition by Enabling Service Switching Act\u201d\u00a0led by Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-Pa) is meant to increase competition by forcing companies to give consumers the ability to switch data between platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The Judiciary Committee will need to vote on the bills before they make their way to the House for approval and then the Senate. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA).<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Drew Angerer\/Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The antitrust reforms follow a 16-month long investigation by the House Judiciary subcommittee on anticompetitive issues into the four tech giants that was completed last year.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the investigation\u2019s 450-page report found that Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google hold monopoly power and that antitrust laws should be revised to better deal with today\u2019s digital media landscape. The report said that major changes for big tech companies may have to spin off or separate parts of their businesses or make them harder to buy smaller companies. <\/p>\n<p>While Democrats and Republicans have disagreed on some of the solutions, they have found common ground on the alleged antitrust issues and agreed that reform was necessary to spark competition. <\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/judiciary.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2938\">has caught flak from lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0for allegedly using data from third-party businesses to develop and promote Amazon-label products like \u201cAmazon Basics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"scribd_iframe_embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/embeds\/511468451\/content?start_page=1&amp;view_mode&amp;access_key=key-0Ebv1A7WCH4nXvX9Lsgo\" data-auto-height=\"true\" scrolling=\"no\" id=\"scribd_511468451\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Amazon\u2019s private label represents a substantial section of the tech giant\u2019s business, boasting 158,000 products from dozens of different brands, according to the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company also has substantial business lines in everything from streaming entertainment through Prime Video and e-readers via Kindle to voice-activated assistants through Echo and doorbell cameras via Ring.
