LONDON \u2014 Google is offering U.K. regulators a role overseeing its phasing out of ad-tracking technology<\/a> from its Chrome browser, in a package of commitments the tech giant is proposing to app<\/a>ly globally to head off a competition investigation.<\/p>\n

The U.K. competition watchdog has been investigating Google\u2019s proposals to remove so-called third-party cookies over concerns they would undermine digital ad competition and entrench the company\u2019s market power.<\/p>\n

To address the concerns, Google on Friday offered a set of commitments including giving the Competition and Markets Authority an oversight role as the company designs and develops a replacement technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe emergence of tech giants such as Google has presented competition authorities around the world with new challenges that require a new approach,\u201d Andrea Coscelli, the watchdog\u2019s chief executive, said.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Competition and Markets Authority<\/a>\u00a0will work with tech companies to \u201cshape their behaviour and protect competition to the benefit of consumers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s promises also include \u201csubstantial limits\u201d on how Google will use and combine individual user data for digital ad purposes and a pledge not to discriminate against rivals in favor of its own ad businesses with the new technology.<\/p>\n

If Google\u2019s commitments are accepted, they will be applied globally, the company\u00a0said in a blog post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Third-party cookies \u2013 snippets of code that log user info \u2013 are used to help businesses more effectively target advertising and fund free online content such as news<\/a>papers. However, they\u2019ve also been a longstanding source of privacy concerns because they can be used to track users across the internet.<\/p>\n

Google shook up the digital ad industry with its plan to do away with third-party cookies, which raised fears newer technology would leave even less room for online ad rivals.\u00a0The plan involves<\/a>\u00a0replacing \u201cindividual identifiers\u201d with techniques that hide users in large online groups based on their interests while keeping web browsing histories on devices to maintain privacy.<\/p>\n

The competition watchdog will seek feedback until July from other players in the tech and digital ad industry on Google\u2019s commitments. Then it will decide whether to accept Google\u2019s offer and close the competition case.<\/p>\n

Google has been busy grappling with a wave tide of antitrust investigations in Europe. The U.K. offer comes days after it resolved another case involving its digital ad business, when it\u00a0agreed to pay\u00a0<\/a>a $268 million to France\u2019s antitrust watchdog for abusing its \u2018dominant\u2019 position in online advertising.\n <\/div>\n
