Paying more for Buffalo wings in the birthplace of the finger-lickin\u2019 favorite? That\u2019s clucked up.<\/p>\n

An ongoing chicken wing shortage has come home to roost in Buffalo, New York, where local restaurants now need to shell out more dough to get them from their distributors \u2014 which has taken a larger bite out of their customers\u2019 wallets.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis time last year, an order of 20 from us came to $25 even [after tax]; right now it\u2019s $31.53,\u201d Jeff Feather, 28, a manager at Duff\u2019s Famous Wings<\/a>, told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve definitely had some customers when they find out the price, cancel the order or not get wings anymore,\u201d said Feather \u2014 who manages the local wing staple with five locations in the Buffalo area, plus others in Texas and Toronto. \u201cFor the most part, people have been understanding about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s another issue being combated by local restaurants, bars and pizzerias on top of the challenges already faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Buffalo News<\/a>. And now, to lessen the sting of higher prices, they\u2019re nixing certain items from their menus \u2014 but stopping short of the city\u2019s famed fried export, a must-have among locals.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was a bit surprised,\u201d Greg Syposs, of Niagara Falls, told the news<\/a>paper of the $63 he coughed up last month at his local spot for his regular order of pizza and 30 wings \u2014 a $10 increase. \u201cI asked and they told me there was a shortage and prices went up on their end \u2026 It\u2019s understandable it would pass on to the consumer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the inconvenience, dedicated wing nuts still flock to nearby joints to get some.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never stopped serving them,\u201d said Feather, whose father, also named Jeff, is Duff\u2019s co-owner. \u201cWe have had to raise prices twice within the past few months \u2014 we\u2019re paying almost double what we normally pay for them. That I don\u2019t see going down anytime soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lately, that\u2019s meant paying 80% more per pound than what Duff\u2019s paid in 2019 \u2014 and sometimes not receiving everything they order from vendors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was definitely a time when we would order 60 cases of wings and 20 cases would get delivered to us because that\u2019s all they had,\u201d Feather told The Post. \u201cWe\u2019re working around it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shortage traces its roots to 2018, according to the Buffalo News. An oversupply in chicken wing production forced the process to slow. Then came the pandemic in 2020, and a shortage of workers and bursting demand for takeout worsened the crunch. The historic winter storm in Texas in February only made supply-chain matters worse when farmers had to euthanize hundreds of thousands of chicks and destroy hundreds of thousands of eggs.<\/p>\n

Now, the average cost of a wing has bloated to between 55 and 60 cents per wing.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u201cnot even worth selling wings right now,\u201d Mike Wylke, the owner of Brick Oven Pizzeria and Pub<\/a> on Grand Island, near Buffalo, told the paper. \u201cWe\u2019re just kind of biting the bullet right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an outlook shared by Feather.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the foreseeable future, I don\u2019t think [it\u2019s] going to change,\u201d he told The Post, later adding there\u2019s reason for optimism as the COVID-19 recovery continues. \u201cAs everything starts to normalize, hopefully, we come with it.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
