Have a Merry \u201cday off\u201d and a Happ<\/a>y \u201cday off\u201d!<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the message from the school board of Randolph Township in Morris County, New Jersey, which unanimously voted Thursday to remove holiday names from their academic calendar following an uproar over renaming Columbus Day to Indigenous People\u2019s Day, according to reports.<\/p>\n

Now holidays like Thanksgiving and Memorial Day, as well as Jewish holy days like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, will simply be listed as \u201cday off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we don\u2019t have anything on the calendar, we don\u2019t have to have anyone [with] hurt feelings or anything like that,\u201d board member Dorene Roche told Fox 5<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Another board member, Ronald Conti, reportedly said before the vote that \u201cI don\u2019t think really it is the board\u2019s responsibility to be naming these holidays. Either take them off or just adopt whatever the federal and state governments are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to local website Tap into Randolph<\/a>, up to 125 people attended Thursday\u2019s board meeting to oppose the Columbus Day change, which the board approved unanimously last month. <\/p>\n

The website reported that Republican state Sen. Anthony Bucco was among those who attended the meeting and spoke out against the change, while three members of the public spoke in favor of the change despite being outnumbered by supporters of keeping Columbus Day. <\/p>\n

Other residents reportedly objected to the fact that the initial vote to rename the holiday was taken without public notice.<\/p>\n

The vote to strip<\/a> holiday names from the calendar reportedly caused confusion, with some attendees reportedly yelling, \u201cWhat happened? What did you just do?\u201d at board members.<\/p>\n

As of Friday, the Randolph Township School District\u2019s 2021-2022 academic calendar<\/a> was available with the holiday names included. <\/p>\n

The backlash was similar to the one faced by New York City\u2019s Education Department earlier this year when it abruptly announced Columbus Day \u2014 celebrated on the second Monday of October \u2014 would be celebrated as Indigenous People\u2019s Day. After an uproar from Italian-American groups, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced schools would be closed Oct. 11 to mark \u201cItalian Heritage Day\/Indigenous People\u2019s Day.\u201d<\/p>\n
