{"id":273025,"date":"2021-06-12T19:59:48","date_gmt":"2021-06-12T16:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/temperatures-reach-high-80s-in-bronx-public-school\/"},"modified":"2021-06-12T19:59:48","modified_gmt":"2021-06-12T16:59:48","slug":"temperatures-reach-high-80s-in-bronx-public-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/temperatures-reach-high-80s-in-bronx-public-school\/","title":{"rendered":"#Temperatures reach high 80s in Bronx public school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Temperatures reach high 80s in Bronx public school<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>New York City schoolchildren are sweating out another sweltering summer in classrooms without air conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s brutal every year,\u201d said Shawanda Weems, an English teacher at PS\/MS 15 in the University Heights section of the Bronx, who recorded indoor temps as high as 88 degrees this week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast week a little 5-year-old just kept waving her hand, because she was sweating,\u201d Weems said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just too hot,\u201d the girl told the veteran educator.<\/p>\n<p>Weems said for years she\u2019s tried to raise the alarm with the Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers \u2014 to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>This week she used four digital thermometers to track the temperature around her school. Images she shared with The Post showed temperatures ranged between 78\u00b0F and 88\u00b0F in her classroom, hallways and stairwells. Rice<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A 2018 Harvard study <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scholar.harvard.edu\/files\/joshuagoodman\/files\/w24639.pdf\">found<\/a> \u201cheat exposure inhibits cognitive skill development and that school air conditioning can mitigate this effect.\u201d The study \u2014 based on data from 10 million American students who took the PSAT more than once \u2014 stated that \u201cwithout air conditioning, each 1\u00b0F increase \u2026 reduces the amount learned that year by one percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOE is \u201ccurrently developing a long-term strategy\u201d to fix broken air conditioners, according to the City Council report. However, \u201cA\/C for All\u201d doesn\u2019t include funding for repairs, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>In an email to teachers on June 7,  the day Weems documented the 88\u00b0F temperature, PS\/MS 15 Principal Sarah Sosbe apologized \u201cfor the temperatures in the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said then that a crew was working on fixing the school\u2019s A\/C, but \u201cthe size of the job does take time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy friends that work in Riverdale never have these issues,\u201d Weems said of the upscale Bronx neighborhood. \u201cMy students have enough stacked against them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UFT did not return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>DOE spokeswoman Sarah Casasnovas said, \u201cEvery student and staff member deserves a comfortable and safe learning environment, and we are working swiftly to restore the school\u2019s air conditioning to full capacity. We\u2019ve deployed portable AC units in the meantime, and our custodial engineers are monitoring the building\u2019s indoor temperatures.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
