You can take advantage of this to run a small Linux box for development.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re just looking to run a simple website, you may not even need a Linux box\u2014services like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pages.github.com\/\">Github Pages<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/new\">Google Sites<\/a> can host simple pages for you for free.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Google_Cloud_Platform\"><\/span>Google Cloud Platform<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/p\/uploads\/2019\/09\/56e4f644.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s Cloud Platform provides the only VPS on this list that is truly free forever. Their <code>f1-micro<\/code>\u00a0is always free, all the time.<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, they also have a very good free trial\u2014upon signing up for a new account, you\u2019ll be given $300 in credit to use on any GCP service. The credit expires after a year.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to link your card to your account to take advantage of this, but don\u2019t worry, you won\u2019t be charged for leaving a server running past the free trial. You\u2019ll have to manually upgrade your account to a paid account once the trial ends.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, make an account and head to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/\">Google Cloud Platform Console<\/a>. You\u2019ll need to make a new \u201cProject,\u201d which is like a container for all your services. Under Compute Engine &gt; VM Instances, you\u2019ll be able to create a new instance:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/p\/uploads\/2019\/09\/1f25b9b5.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have to edit the instance details to add your SSH keys, or access it through a web-based terminal.<\/p>\n<p>The <code>f1-micro<\/code>\u00a0is free forever, and has 0.2 vCPUs and 600 MB of RAM. Not the best VPS in the world, but good enough to run Linux and a few simple <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications. Though with the $300 free credit, you could run a <code>n1-standard-1<\/code>\u00a0instance with 1 vCPU and 3.5 GB of RAM (about $25 a month) for the full 12 months before the credit runs out.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amazon_Web_Services\"><\/span>Amazon Web Services<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/p\/uploads\/2019\/09\/821c14ca.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>AWS provides a free tier for almost all of their services for a year after you sign up. This includes a free <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> purpose\u00a0<code>t2.micro<\/code>\u00a0instance with 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have to link your card to verify your account, and you should definitely set a reminder on your calendar 11 months in the future\u2014AWS will charge you once your free tier is up, and they don\u2019t do a great job of advertising that it\u2019s a free\u00a0<em>trial<\/em> and not exactly a free\u00a0<em>tier.\u00a0<\/em>One thing that does have a free tier forever is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/lambda\/?tag=reviewgeek-20\">Lambda<\/a>; if you want to run serverless cloud functions, you can do so entirely for free.<\/p>\n<p>AWS doesn\u2019t give out promotional credit on signups, but if you\u2019re a student with a <code>.edu<\/code>\u00a0email, you can get free credit through <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/education\/awseducate\/?tag=reviewgeek-20\">AWS Educate.<\/a>\u00a0If your school is partnered, you\u2019ll get $100, and if it\u2019s not, you\u2019ll get $40.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, create an AWS account and head over to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/console.aws.amazon.com\/?tag=reviewgeek-20\">AWS Management Console<\/a>. From here, select Services &gt; EC2. You\u2019ll have to select an OS; Windows costs extra on most instances, but is free for your free <code>t2.micro<\/code>\u00a0instance.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be asked to download a PEM file; this is your private key to the instance. You\u2019ll want to use <code>ssh -i keyfile.pem<\/code>\u00a0to connect to it.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Microsoft_Azure\"><\/span>Microsoft Azure<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/p\/uploads\/2019\/09\/159450b1.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Azure has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/free\/\">free tier<\/a>\u00a0that includes a\u00a0B1S instance with 1 vCPU and 1 GB of RAM. You\u2019ll also get $200 in free credit, but you\u2019re only given a month to use it. The free tier, however, lasts a whole year, after which the only services with free tiers are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/services\/functions\/\">Azure Functions<\/a> and other APIs.<\/p>\n<p>The 12-month free tier includes 250 GB of SQL storage, so you\u2019ll be able to set up a large database for free. You\u2019re also given 64 GB of free block storage for your virtual machine to run on, as well as 5 GB of shared file storage.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike AWS, you won\u2019t be charged after your free tier is up. You\u2019ll have to manually upgrade to a pay-as-you-go account to enable billing.<\/p>\n<p>To get started, navigate to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/portal.azure.com\/\">Azure Portal<\/a>\u00a0and select \u201cVirtual Machines\u201d from the sidebar. From this tab, you can add a new instance:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cloudsavvyit.com\/p\/uploads\/2019\/09\/4fc11951.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Make sure you select the free-for-12-months BS1 instance, as the menu defaults to a much more expensive instance at $70 per month.
