Kim Jong Un is cracking down on DPRK-pop fans. <\/p>\n

Amid increasing cultural influence from South Korea, the 37-year-old North Korean leader is imposing harsher penalties on citizens caught listening to \u201cperverse\u201d K-pop music. <\/p>\n

The secretive anti-K-pop campaign came to light through internal documents smuggled out of the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea (DPRK) by the Seoul-based news<\/a> source Daily NK, the New York Times<\/a> first reported Friday. These were then made public by South Korean legislators. <\/p>\n

The newly slimmed-down DPRK despot had dubbed the southern cultural imports a \u201cvicious cancer\u201d corrupting North Korean youths\u2019 \u201cattire, hairstyles, speeches, behaviors\u201d \u00e0 la the dancing in the \u201980s movie \u201cFootloose\u201d \u2014 but with a much darker bent.<\/p>\n

In an app<\/a>arent bid to launch his own brand of cancel culture, Kim introduced new laws in December stipulating that anyone caught watching or possessing South Korean content could be sentenced to up to 15 years of hard labor. The previous maximum punishment for fans of popular acts such as BTS was five years.<\/p>\n

If that wasn\u2019t harsh enough, K-pop smugglers could even face execution while those caught singing, speaking or writing in a \u201cSouth Korean style\u201d could be sentenced to two years at a work camp, per the smuggled documents. <\/p>\n

This past May, a citizen was killed via firing squad for hawking bootleg South Korean music and other entertainment.<\/p>\n

South Korean entertainment has long been smuggled across the DPRK border, initially in cassette form and eventually as flash drives from China. However, the \u201cHermit Kingdom<\/a>\u201d honcho has ramped up the the anti-capitalist rhetoric in recent months as he sees his nation become increasingly susceptible to the cultural stylings from the south, the Daily Mail reported.<\/a><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in February, Kim \u2014 whose family has ruled the country for three generations \u2014 ordered the nation\u2019s provinces, cities and counties to clamp down on increasing capitalist influence. <\/p>\n

North Korean state media<\/a> even warned that the popular music genre could make the nation \u201ccrumble like a damp wall\u201d if something isn\u2019t done.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the K-pop prohibition comes at a terrible time for the rogue regime, whose COVID-19 lockdown further crippled an economy wracked by decades of mismanagement and US-led sanctions over Kim\u2019s nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n

In the heat of the upheaval, experts say, young North Koreans are more likely to adopt outside customs and challenge Kim\u2019s authority. <\/p>\n

\u201cTo Kim Jong Un, the cultural invasion from South Korea has gone beyond a tolerable level,\u201d said Jiro Ishimaru, chief editor of Asia Press International<\/a>, a Japanese website that reports on North Korea. \u201cIf this is left unchecked, he fears that his people might start considering the South an alternative Korea to replace the North.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Korean millennials who grew up during the 1990s famine are especially disillusioned with the state, which had long pushed the notion that South Korea was a beggar-infested hellhole. By watching bootlegged Korean content, they learned that while they were starving to death, their southern brethren were trying to shed pounds through dieting. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just listening to K-pop that\u2019s the problem. Lately, Korean slang has started to infiltrate everyday conversation, with North Korean women increasingly calling their boyfriends \u201coppa\u201d \u2014 a term for \u201choney\u201d popularized by South Korean dramas \u2014 rather than the state-mandated \u201ccomrade.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to eradicate the \u201cperverse\u201d phenomenon, state officials have been ordered to search computers, text messages and notebooks for South Korean vernacular, while people caught mimicking the \u201cpuppet accent\u201d could be banished from cities, per the top-secret papers.<\/p>\n

However, it might be too late the curb the trend. A South Korean study of 116 recent defectors found that nearly half had \u201cfrequently\u201d enjoyed southern content while residing in the DPRK, the New York Times reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung North Koreans think they owe nothing to Kim Jong Un,\u201d said Jung Gwang-il, a North Korean defector who smuggles K-pop into his former motherland. \u201cHe must reassert his ideological control on the young if he doesn\u2019t want to lose the foundation for the future of his family\u2019s dynastic rule.\u201d<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Kim has cracked down on so-called anti-socialist tendencies. <\/p>\n

This past April, the mushroom-haired dictator infamously outlawed mullets and skinny jeans in an attempt to cut off \u201cdecadent\u201d Western-style fashion trends.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
