It\u2019s been difficult not only dealing at the hospital, but also just getting to work has been really rough,\u201d said Santos, who works 24-hour shifts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live in downtown Manhattan, so it has become difficult to continue to take the subway to work at all hours. I\u2019ve even had to call the police,\u201d she said, when a thug descended on her at her station, in addition to dodging the dicey activities. \u201cI saw people smoking crack. I\u2019ve never seen the subway like that \u2014 it was really bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the height of the crisis, she said, she would cry on her way home from work after seeing patients in so much pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were really hit hard at the hospital,\u201d said Santos, who, like many in her unit, contracted the virus herself back in March, but went right back to work after about 10 days. \u201cYou help people any way you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Makeover musings:<\/strong> \u201cI definitely neglected my self-care. I haven\u2019t been to a salon since February,\u201d said Santos, who lives on her own. \u201cYou let things go. I had 4-inch roots!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But with her blond locks refreshed, the health-care hero is back in business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely feel more like my old self. I\u2019m so h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y now,\u201d she said. \u201cI look at myself in the mirror, and said, \u2018I don\u2019t look so\u00a0 bad anymore!&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Syndia_Cruz_45_Westchester_County\"><\/span>Syndia Cruz, 45, Westchester County<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15982271\"><img alt=\"Syndia Cruz\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Syndia Cruz<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Job:<\/strong> MTA bus operator<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life on the front lines:<\/strong> \u201cWe had a wave of co-workers passing because of the virus,\u201d said Cruz, a 12-year MTA veteran, who was putting in 12- to 16-hour shifts until a month ago, because many co-workers were in quarantine or sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had less staff \u2014 we were spread so thin,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been so stressful. I\u2019ve aged about 10 years in the last couple of months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the MTA pledged to disinfect buses and subways every 24 hours, Cruz said not knowing who had been on the bus still adds to the anxiety. She\u2019s unsure of the procedure and doesn\u2019t take any chances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know if the operator before you was sick,\u201d said Cruz, who lives with her boyfriend. Her work backpack \u201clooks like a small ER \u2014 with gloves, masks, extra cleaning supplies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, there has been one bright side to the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve become better co-workers,\u201d she said. \u201cWe check in on each other. We\u2019re in this together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Makeover musings: <\/strong>\u201cI don\u2019t get a whole lot of time, between working long hours and a two-hour commute each way. Keeping up with my looks and getting prettied up lately wasn\u2019t a priority,\u201d said Cruz, whose hair was dyed and trimmed. \u201cI love my makeover! I felt like a princess. I\u2019m feeling very confident with my new color \u2014 I don\u2019t have the grays anymore. I feel young. This is not an easy job, and the pandemic added another layer of stress.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Angelique_Paveras_37_Queens\"><\/span>Angelique Paveras, 37, Queens<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15982275\"><img alt=\"Angelique Paveras\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Angelique Paveras<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Job:<\/strong> NYPD sergeant<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life on the front lines:<\/strong> \u201cWhen you start this job, people say that when everyone\u2019s running away from something, you run towards it,\u201d said Paveras, a 14-year NYPD veteran.<\/p>\n<p>Between the pandemic and the protests, Paveras said, \u201cWork and home life have changed a lot. You gotta worry about your safety, and keeping your whole family safe. It can feel like psychological warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While she and her firefighter husband, who sometimes works 24-hour shifts, are on duty their 3-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter are cared for by her elderly mother, who, as a cancer survivor, is in a higher-risk group for COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Her routine after coming home is to \u201cdecon\u201d [decontaminate] and s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> down in a laundry area, take a shower, then clean and disinfect common surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the beginning, it was very hard with my 3-year-old son, who ran to hug me,\u201d Paveras said. \u201cBut now, unfortunately, it\u2019s become a norm. He knows \u2018Mommy has to clean first.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Makeover musings:<\/strong> \u201cThere is no personal time. The last time I did something for myself was maybe six months ago, before the pandemic,\u201d she said. Getting a scalp treatment and a mani-pedi \u201cwas so relaxing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best part is when they massage your head,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was the first time in a long time I actually felt pampered.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lesly_Morales_18_Flatbush\"><\/span>Lesly Morales, 18, Flatbush<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15982277\"><img alt=\"Lesly Morales\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Lesly Morales<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Job:<\/strong> Grocery store clerk<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life on the front lines:<\/strong> \u201cI wasn\u2019t scared of the pandemic, but it was definitely stressful,\u201d said Morales, who has worked long shifts over the past few months to wipe down registers and carts, organize curbside pickup orders for the elderly and calm down demanding customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were all freaking out about toilet paper,\u201d she said. Yeast and flour shortages followed the toilet paper one, according to Morales, and lately, \u201cPeople keep buying bananas, cereal, canned goods and ice cream,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The teen works six shifts per week at FoodTown in Prospect Heights and said she\u2019s developed a new self-care routine over the past few months: \u201cSometimes I take a walk around the neighborhood after work to decompress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also hasn\u2019t been afraid to take beauty matters into her own hands: cutting her hair, experimenting with red and green dyes, and using an acne-fighting face wash and lotion to combat the dreaded \u201cmaskne.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m trying to take better care of my skin, since the mask makes me break out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Makeover musings:<\/strong> At the salon, Morales went with a short bob to compliment her blunt bangs and a return to her natural dark brown color. \u201cI wanted to start the summer fresh,\u201d said the cashier, who lives with her parents.<\/p>\n<p>She said her new look is perfect for long days at work: \u201cI just put a hair clip in to keep my bangs out of my face and I\u2019m out the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shaneen_Spivey_45_Jersey_City\"><\/span>Shaneen Spivey, 45, Jersey City<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15982285\"><img alt=\"Shaneen Spivey\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Shaneen Spivey<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Job:<\/strong> Cleaner for the MTA<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life on front lines<\/strong>: Single mom Shaneen Spivey can\u2019t work from home. \u201cTrains still need to be fixed up,\u201d said Spivey, who works as a cleaner in a train yard in Coney Island, where the subways are serviced.<\/p>\n<p>Along with juggling cooking, laundry and spending time with her 11-year-old daughter, Spivey made time to watch <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> tutorials and teach herself how to braid her own hair and her daughter\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has a head full of hair, it\u2019s like another job,\u201d she said. \u201cIt takes me about two days to finish braiding my natural hair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Makeover musings:<\/strong> \u201cAt the salon, I got a root touch-up, a blowout and a cut, which I wouldn\u2019t be able to do myself,\u201d said Spivey, who says her hair was damaged from the braiding.
