Gal pals Ruth Schwartz, Lorraine Pirrello and Edith \u201cMitzie\u201d Moscou like to spend time together doing gentle exercise, playing board game<\/a>s and reminiscing about old times.<\/p>\n

But this week, these golden girls have an extra special reason to enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n

They are jointly celebrating the remarkable achievement of turning 100 within days of each other.<\/p>\n

Born in June 1921 \u2014 the same month, over at Yankee Stadium, Babe Ruth broke the career home-run record \u2014 the Manhattan residents can hardly believe the milestone they share.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I\u2019d reach this moment, but the years kind of crept up on me and here I am,\u201d laughed Schwartz, a graduate of NYU who spent her career as a special needs teacher.<\/p>\n

Her birthday is on Tuesday, three days after Moscou\u2019s and three days before Pirrello\u2019s.<\/p>\n

They will attend a series<\/a> of parties thrown by friends and family, but were also recently treated to a fun f\u00eate at Atria Senior Living<\/a>, the place the women call home.<\/p>\n

Staff at the Upper West Side facility on 86th Street near Riverside Drive put up banners and balloons before singing three renditions of \u201cHapp<\/a>y Birthday.\u201d Slices of a giant cake topped with candles were washed down with Champagne.<\/p>\n

The occasion was particularly poignant for Pirrello, as she was able to reunite with her niece, Jeanette Fiorie. Until now, due to the pandemic, Fiorie had only been able to talk with her aunt on the phone or through Zoom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI used to only have my meals in my room,\u201d said Pirrello, who, along with Schwartz and Moscou, has since been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. \u201cI didn\u2019t like it. But I\u2019ve got my independence back now.\u201d<\/p>\n

An accomplished opera singer who performed at the Met, she will be treated to a birthday lunch at Carmine\u2019s attended by friends from the New York tennis circuit.<\/p>\n

Pirrello was well into her 90s before she hung up her racket, switching her interests to bridge. She credits her longevity to pursuing her passions.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo what you love \u2026 and commit to it,\u201d the mezzo-soprano advised younger people. \u201cIt should bring you tremendous joy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked about the formula for a longer life, Moscou suggested \u201cmaking the best of each day.\u201d The retired manager, who worked in the office of her husband, an attorney, feels \u201cwonderful\u201d about turning 100.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very happy I made it this far,\u201d she said. Referencing the coronavirus, Moscou said: \u201cI am very fortunate to have skipped over all the sickness, to survive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the pandemic had separated Schwartz from her son, Andrew, for nearly two years. Mercifully, that estrangement ended Saturday, when he arrived from California for his mom\u2019s 100th birthday bash.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be marvelous to be surrounded by my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren,\u201d Schwartz said ahead of the reunion.<\/p>\n

When she\u2019s not partying, the bon vivant keeps herself busy attending \u201call that New York offers,\u201d such as opera recitals, lectures and outdoor concerts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have my mind and my health,\u201d Schwartz concluded, \u201cand I\u2019m very grateful for those.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
