\n There are four planets in the Solar System that have rings \u2014 Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. A new study, however, suggests that Mars may have also once been a ringed planet.<\/p>\n

The research<\/a> highlights that one of Mars\u2019 moons, Deimos, has a slightly altered orbit that suggests there was something responsible for its slight tilt.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that Deimos\u2019s orbit is not exactly in plane with Mars\u2019s equator was considered unimportant and nobody cared to try to explain it,\u201d said the study\u2019s lead author Matija \u0106uk, a research scientist at the SETI Institute, in a statement.<\/a> \u201cBut once we had a big new idea and we looked at it with new eyes, Deimos\u2019s orbital tilt revealed its big secret.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deimos is slightly tilted by two degrees to the Martian equator.<\/p>\n

The researchers noted that the findings came after looking at Mars\u2019 other moon, Phobos, which they note will eventually orbit too low to the planet (in an astronomical time frame) and the Red Planet\u2019s gravity will tear it apart and form a ring around Mars.<\/p>\n

The theory that Mars\u2019 moons break up and form rings has another element to it, the researchers noted. \u201c[A] newborn moon would move away from the ring and Mars,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cWhich is in the opposite direction from the inward spiral Phobos is experiencing due to gravitational interactions with Mars. An outward-migrating moon just outside the rings can encounter a so-called orbital resonance, in which Deimos\u2019s orbital period is three times that of the other moon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study has been accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters.<\/p>\n

Researchers are learning more about Mars\u2019 ancient past. A study published in March suggested<\/a> the Red Planet had two unique reservoirs of ancient water that once flowed deep beneath the planet\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n

NASA is slated to launch the recently renamed Perseverance<\/a> rover on July 17, 2020. In March, Fox News reported<\/a> the pandemic had not yet impacted launch preps for the unmanned rover, with work \u201ccontinuing on schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Perseverance rover will attempt to detect if there is any fossilized evidence<\/a> of extraterrestrial beings, in addition to other tasks.<\/p>\n

NASA\u2019s long-term goal is to send a manned mission to Mars in the 2030s.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
