He claimed the fast-chow biz has broken BIPA by not obtaining written consent from its customers to collect and process their voice data.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Illinois has some of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/ilcs\/ilcs3.asp?ActID=3004&amp;ChapterID=57\">stiffest biometric privacy laws<\/a> in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently stems from the company\u2019s use of automated drive-thru order takers in the form of chatbots.<\/p>\n<p>Drive-thru customers were subjected to experimental natural language processing (NLP) AI in the state, in at least <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/09\/10\/mcdonalds-acquires-ai-company-trying-to-automate-the-drive-thru.html\">10 of the company\u2019s locations<\/a>. While it\u2019s unclear exactly what AI systems McDonald\u2019s was using during the trial, it stands to reason the company would need to collect and store user data in order to train its AI.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_big_picture\"><\/span>The big picture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to spot precedence in the wild, but there\u2019s no denying the world sits on the rocky precipice of embracing autonomy. This very well could be the legal catalyst that kicks off the big business V big government debate over how we\u2019re going to go about transitioning to the next <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> paradigm for capitalism.<\/p>\n<p>From a purely business-oriented POV, McDonald\u2019s might not be in as bad a position as it appears. What\u2019s an eight-figure lawsuit to company worth nearly $200 billion?<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s has been dabbling in AI systems <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/supplychainnext.wbresearch.com\/blog\/mcdonalds-ai-data-optimize-supply-chain\">for years now<\/a>, and there\u2019s an argument to be made that it\u2019s poised to lead the charge when it comes to autonomous systems.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_perfect_storm\"><\/span>The perfect storm<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Autonomous robotics technology is nothing new. Today it powers automotive factories and the garment manufacturing industry.<\/p>\n<p>And that makes it easy for us to imagine other industries, such as fast food, adopting a similar approach. We\u2019ve certainly heard a lot about <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZiD_6ex2ptY\">burger-flipping robots<\/a>\u00a0and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/insights.dice.com\/2019\/07\/16\/automation-hurt-entry-professionals\/\">the end of entry-level jobs<\/a> for the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of discourse on automation focuses on the one-for-one human costs of replacement. We often envision the debate being about whether the efficiency and corporate labor cost reductions are worth the potential mass displacement of human workers.<\/p>\n<p>But what if we stop thinking about McDonald\u2019s like a greasy spoon and start thinking of it like <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, Google, or Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>The mainstream my recognize those as a social network, search giant, and OS developer respectively, but the truth of the matter is each one is an AI-first company. And with each passing year, AI endeavors make up a greater portion of their profits and net worth.<\/p>\n<p><i>[Read: Global AI market predicted to reach nearly $1 trillion by 2028]<\/i><\/p>\n<p>If McDonald\u2019s were to convert its global market position as a restaurateur into a horizontal entry into the technology sector\u2026 interesting things could happen.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"McDonalds_but_as_an_AI_company\"><\/span>McDonald\u2019s, but as an AI company<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>S<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> away the what and how of where McDonald\u2019s exists as a global corporation and you can compare it to other big tech businesses. The most apt comparison might be Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s serves <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thefiscaltimes.com\/Articles\/2012\/04\/30\/13-Disturbing-Facts-About-McDonalds\">approximately one percent of the global population<\/a> on a daily basis. Facebook, by contrast, reaches <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/346167\/facebook-global-dau\/\">approximately 25% of the population<\/a>. The biggest difference between the two, arguably, is that consumers typically have to pay to use the former\u2019s services while Facebook monetizes its customers.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s imagine a new McDonald\u2019s where the food no longer costs money. Like Facebook, all you\u2019d have to do is sign up and create a profile. Then, you could either go to a McDonald\u2019s location to pick up food or request a delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Every few orders, however, you may be asked to do something simple such as filling out a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of questionnaires similar to those \u201cI\u2019m not a robot\u201d CAPTCHA\u2019s where you click on the traffic lights or bicycles.<\/p>\n<p>You might be tasked with ordering via voice or handwriting, so the system can capture your biometric data.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time, however, you\u2019d just get free food for signing up and agreeing to McDonald\u2019s terms and conditions.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Behold_Hypercapitalism\"><\/span>Behold: Hypercapitalism<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If this sounds a bit like socialism or communism, just remember: there\u2019s no such thing as a free lunch. Whatever data McDonald\u2019s could gather would be worth a fortune. It\u2019s already a globally recognized brand with more than 38,000 locations in 100 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The reason why so many big tech companies have pivoted to AI is because it\u2019s a trillionaire\u2019s market. Anyone can gather data, but only a few organizations have the money and infrastructure to gather data from billions of people at a time \u2013 and even fewer can ensure they\u2019ll keep coming back for more no matter what.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing stopping McDonald\u2019s from using its burgers and nuggets to achieve the same goals as Facebook does with Candy Crush and conservative conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>The picture starts to come into focus when you consider that Facebook was founded in 2004 and it\u2019s worth $280 billion while the first McDonald\u2019s opened in 1955 and its <em>only<\/em> worth $170 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Could McDonald\u2019s turn feeding the hungry into the next big global data-gathering endeavor?
