\n Airbnb is encouraging users to make donations to its \u201chosts\u201d who\u2019ve been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis \u2014 sparking outrage Tuesday over the \u201ctone deaf\u201d appeal.<\/p>\n

A Twitter<\/a> user in London posted a screenshot of an email, in which the short-term rental company said that \u201chosts on Airbnb are impacted by COVID-19, and many of them are unable to welcome guests.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNow you can created personalized kindness cards that make it easy to send a message of appreciation or encouragement, with the option to add a contribution,\u201d the message adds.<\/p>\n

Recipient @olenskae tweeted, alongside the screenshot: \u201cAirbnb has lost its f\u2013king head. Why would I donate to my host? I can\u2019t even afford one house.\u201d<\/p>\n

The tweet quickly racked up more than 32,000 likes and sarcastic comments that included \u201cplease, won\u2019t someone think of the landlords.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got that email this morning and couldn\u2019t believe how tone deaf it was,\u201d added @Su_Barrett.<\/p>\n

User @jayney_mack added: \u201cJesus\u2026 As an Airbnb host (of one property where I live in a rural area, not a greedy bastard buying them up), if one my guests got this email I would be morto! We\u2019re all struggling but I don\u2019t want a f\u2013king handout from guests who are also struggling!\u201d<\/p>\n

The pandemic left privately held Airbnb poised to lose $1 billion through the end of June, with layoffs possible, the Wall Street Journal reported in April.<\/p>\n

In a statement to SFGATE, which first reported on the \u201ckindness cards\u201d appeal, an Airbnb spokesperson said the online business had \u201cheard from many Airbnb guests who were interested in supporting and reconnecting with past hosts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the spirit of rekindling connections, we developed a new feature that allows guests to send virtual cards with messages of support and encouragement to hosts who provided excellent hospitality,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they wish, guests have the option to add a voluntary financial contribution.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
