Controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene apologized Monday for likening mask and vaccination mandates to anti-Jewish laws enforced by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe horrors of the Holocaust are something that some people don\u2019t even believe happ<\/a>ened, that some people deny,\u201d Greene told reporters following a visit to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no comparison to the Holocaust and there are words that I have said, remarks that I\u2019ve made that I know are offensive and I want to apologize.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Georgia Republican was the focus of bipartisan outrage last month when she criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for requiring that all members wear masks in the House chamber except when speaking during debate. (The rule was changed last week to allow fully vaccinated members and their staff to go without masks.) <\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, we can look back at a time in history when people were told to wear a gold star, and they were definitely treated like second-class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to gas chambers in Nazi Germany,\u201d Greene told Christian Broadcasting Network\u2019s David Brody at the time. \u201cAnd this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Days later, Greene doubled down by tweeting an article about a Tennessee grocery store that had added a \u201cvaccination logo\u201d to employee name badges. <\/p>\n

\u201cVaccinated employees get a vaccination logo just like the Nazi\u2019s forced Jewish people to wear a gold star. Vaccine passports & mask mandates create discrimination against unvaxxed people who trust their immune systems to a virus that is 99% survivable,\u201d she tweeted on May 25. <\/p>\n

\u201cPretty soon it will be, \u2018We only hire vaccinated people, show your vax papers\u2019,\u201d Greene added. \u201c\u2018We only admit vaccinated students, show your vax papers.\u2019 \u2018These bathrooms are only for vaccinated people, show your vax papers.\u2019 Then.. \u2026scan your bar code or swipe your chip on your arm.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those tweets led to more outrage, with at least one GOP lawmaker suggesting that Greene be expelled from the House Republican Caucus.<\/p>\n

Despite walking back her earlier comments, Greene insisted Monday that mask and vaccine mandates are a \u201cform of discrimination\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that forced masks and forced vaccines and vaccines passports are a type of discrimination, and I\u2019m very much against that type of discrimination,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat I would like to say is I\u2019m removing that statement completely away from what I had said before.\u201d<\/p>\n

In February, Greene was strip<\/a>ped of her House committee assignments over past statements espousing various conspiracy theories, including QAnon and the 9\/11 \u201ctruther\u201d movement. She declined to say Monday whether Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) should meet the same fate over a tweet she posted last week stating the US, Israel Hamas and the Taliban had all committed \u201cunspeakable atrocities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think those are unbelievably insulting statements to our American military and to the Israeli military,\u201d Greene said. \u201cThere is no comparison \u2026 and it was good to see members of her own party call her out on that. I don\u2019t think that that\u2019s the type of views \u2014 and it\u2019s more than just her statements about the military, it\u2019s also been words from the entire Squad that have been brought hate, and maybe encouraged attacks on Jewish Americans.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
