Spreading love: It\u2019s the Brooklynettes way.<\/p>\n

As the Brooklyn Nets gear up to face off against the Milwaukee Bucks in Game<\/a> 5 of the NBA\u2019s Eastern Conference playoffs Tuesday, the team\u2019s all-female dance group is keeping the energy high \u2014\u00a0and rebounding from the pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t until very recently that we were like, \u2018Wait, I think we are the only ones actually performing,\u2019\u201d Brooklynettes head coach Asha Singh told The Post. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut coming back was just like running business as usual for us,\u201d added Singh, 31. \u201cOur level of excellence, our Brooklyn standard, has always been top-tier.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former team dancer-turned-drill instructor and her 20 hoofing hotties resumed in-person performances at the Barclays Center in February \u2014 nearly a year after the COVID-19 eruption placed them on an indefinite sabbatical. <\/p>\n

When the NBA suspended its 2019-2020 season last March, it left the league\u2019s 30 dance troupes \u2014\u00a0one for each team \u2014\u00a0out of work. Even when games resumed in July, with teams living and playing within a \u201cbubble\u201d in Orlando, Florida, the dancers weren\u2019t included.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur whole entire world was rocked. It was tough,\u201d said Singh, who was in the middle of her first year as coach. \u201c[We went] from a high-energy schedule to nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Kansas City native has been dancing since she was 5. Before joining the Brooklynettes in 2013, Singh performed onstage with artists like Beyonc\u00e9 and Alicia Keys. But the pandemic put a hard pause on her groove for the first time.<\/p>\n

Like most New Yorkers, she and her dancers spent the first few weeks of quarantine locked inside their respective homes, waiting out the uncertainty of the virus. Auditions for the 2020-2021 Brooklynettes season were cancelled. <\/p>\n

But the troupe didn\u2019t stay still for long \u2014\u00a0after all, video calls aren\u2019t just for desk-bound workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe held practices over Zoom,\u201d said team captain and choreographer Pamela Gaccione, who started dancing for the Nets Kids company at age 12, when the team still repped the Garden State. (She joined the adult squad eight years ago, at 18.)<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course there were challenges,\u201d she added, noting spotty Wi-Fi setbacks and space restrictions. Some of the girls could barely hit a high kick without bumping into furniture in their apartments.<\/p>\n

Add that to the fact that many of the women \u2014\u00a0including Gaccione, a fifth grade social<\/a> studies teacher \u2014\u00a0were also juggling jobs and family commitments. \u201cAll of us on the team are not just dancers,\u201d she said. Some were also dealing with the stress of not being able to work at their second jobs during lockdown. \u201cA lot of us are professional actors and models, some are fitness trainers and some are cooks.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it finally got to the point that dancing in the house was too limiting.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the time dancers would have to take the choreography that was given over Zoom to a bigger area to try it out,\u201d Gaccione said. A few girls met up outside of the Barclays and ran through their moves together while socially distanced.<\/p>\n

Now that they are back inside Barclays, there are some changes. In the pre-pandemic days, the women took center court to dazzle the crowd. Now, as regulations shift, they dance on two stages that were recently built inside the venue or on platforms right alongside the fans in the stands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot even explain the energy,\u201d Brooklynette co-captain Celine Edmondson \u2014\u00a0a 25-year-old pro dancer who performed with Maluma at the 2020 VMAs\u00a0\u2014 said of recent audiences. \u201cIt\u2019s unmatched.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWe hear fans yelling, \u2018I love you Brooklynettes, you\u2019re the best!\u2019\u201d said Singh, who\u2019s typically on the sidelines watching her dancers\u2019 every move. \u201cYou can feel the exchange of energy between the fans and the dancers. It\u2019s been really incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

There has been one challenge, she admitted: \u201cWe had to relearn how to dance with a mask on.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to performance quality [and] how to play up eye expression, I tell the ladies to keep smiling underneath the masks. It makes everything look more polished.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Gaccione said that, as with many of the past year\u2019s obstacles, this one has only made the Brooklynettes better.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt forced us to perform 10 times more with our bodies and our body language,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that we were able to \u2026 come back in-person and be stronger than we even were, it\u2019s amazing.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
