Morgan Stanley\u2019s chief executive said he expects all New York City employees to be back at their desks by Labor Day \u2014 or they will face salary cuts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be very disapp<\/a>ointed if people haven\u2019t found their way into the office and then we\u2019ll have a different kind of conversation,\u201d James Gorman said in a virtual conference Monday from the bank\u2019s office at 1585 Broadway.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake no mistake about it. We do our work inside Morgan Stanley offices, and that\u2019s where we teach, that\u2019s where our interns learn, that\u2019s how we develop people,\u201d the head honcho added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can go into a restaurant in New York City, you can come into the office.\u201d<\/p>\n

The investment bank has allowed its 70,000 employees to work from home during the pandemic but is now sending a clear message that remote work is not the new norm.<\/p>\n

Gorman even threatened the possibility of pay cuts if staff do not comply.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to get paid New York rates, you work in New York. None of this, \u2018I\u2019m in Colorado and work in New York and am getting paid like I\u2019m sitting in New York City,’\u201d Gorman said. <\/p>\n

\u201cSorry, that doesn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Morgan Stanley has been slower to bring people back compared to other banks like Godman Sachs and JPMorgan.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
