Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) and Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) <em>finally<\/em> getting together wasn\u2019t the only major moment of the <em>New Amsterdam<\/em> Season 3 finale. Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) accepted a promotion, only to find out it came from the husband of the woman he\u2019s been seeing, Dr. Lyn Malvo (Frances Turner). The pair have an open marriage. Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) risked her career to get her girlfriend Leyla (Shiva Kalaiselvan) a residency spot at the hospital. And Dr. Iggy Frome (Tyler Labine) decided he\u2019s done seeing patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s in a hopefully beautiful place by the end of the season,\u201d executive producer David Schulner tells TV Insider. \u201cEveryone has exactly what they always wanted. [But] sometimes a new beginning or getting everything you wanted is going to be a lot more than you bargained for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So what\u2019s next? It won\u2019t be an easy journey for anyone.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reynolds_Complicated_Love_Story\"><\/span>Reynolds\u2019 Complicated Love Story<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Despite initially fighting his attraction to Lyn because he knew about her (open) marriage, by the finale, the two were very much \u2026 as together as they can be in the situation? Then, the Chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Surgery, Dr. Claude Baptiste (Andre Blake), offered him the position of Deputy Chair of Surgery \u2026 and Reynolds met his wife, Lyn. As you probably expect, he won\u2019t be handling this all that well in Season 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a world where storytelling in film and television is so much about relationships, about longing,\u201d executive producer and director <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tvinsider.com\/people\/peter-horton\">Peter Horton<\/a> says. \u201cSo much of our storytelling is about love stories. We already did Reynolds falling in love with Evie [Margot Bingham] and being engaged and all of that stuff.\u201d (Fun fact: Season 2 originally ended with Reynolds and Evie getting married in \u201ca big wedding, a big celebration,\u201d Schulner reveals. How about she\u2019s married to another man, but it\u2019s not illicit in that it\u2019s an open marriage, but as with anything like that, it\u2019s so much more complicated it\u2019s initially intended to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This situation results in quite a few questions for the writers to tackle moving forward. \u201cWhat\u2019s it like if you have someone who\u2019s agreed with their husband to have an open marriage, but has never done anything about it before and is ambivalent herself and yet she\u2019s really drawn to Reynolds? And here\u2019s Reynolds, who has this idea of what he wants for a marriage and life but is magnetized by this woman and he can\u2019t let her go. How does that work? Where does that go?\u201d Horton asks.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Blooms_Major_Risk_for_Love\"><\/span>Bloom\u2019s Major Risk for Love<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Upon facing her girlfriend potentially moving away when she didn\u2019t score a residency spot at New Amsterdam, Bloom went to see if there was anything she could do \u2014 and found out there was: a bribe. My heart goes out to her. It\u2019s easy to judge her decision, but coming out of this last year and a half, I\u2019m not going to judge anyone\u2019s right to happiness or desperate attempts to hold on to the good things in your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Bloom has been doing well (she was happy this season!), we can\u2019t forget her past struggles. \u201cBloom is a former addict,\u201d Horton reminds us. \u201cShe\u2019s not good at depriving herself of what she wants and she\u2019s really found something she\u2019s never had before with Leyla. She\u2019s found a genuine love. When she\u2019s faced with doing the right thing and losing her or doing the wrong thing and keeping her, she just can\u2019t help herself. She\u2019s got an addict sensibility, but she\u2019s also a good person. So she knows what she\u2019s done is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expect to see this weigh on their relationship going forward as Leyla begins working for Bloom and remains in the dark about just how she scored that spot. \u201cHow does a secret like that eat away at the foundation of a relationship and a love affair? It\u2019s a little like having an affair. Once you have a secret in a relationship with somebody, it\u2019s not benign, it eats away, it lives, it impacts things,\u201d Horton continues. \u201cIt\u2019s full of potential conflict and pending disasters because of the decisions that she\u2019s made.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Iggys_Drastic_Decision\"><\/span>Iggy\u2019s Drastic Decision<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In the penultimate episode of Season 3, the patient, Chance (Luke Slattery), Iggy had taken a restraining order out against broke into his house. To keep him calm and get him to leave, the psychiatrist had to lie. (\u201cYou finally put yourself first,\u201d his husband Martin, played by Mike Doyle, told him.) As a result of that trauma, Iggy decided in the finale that he is no longer going to see patients.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1002420\" style=\"width: 2038px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1002420\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1002420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy.jpg\" alt=\"New Amsterdam Season 3 Finale Martin Iggy Family\" width=\"2028\" height=\"1353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy.jpg 2028w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy-433x289.jpg 433w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy-854x570.jpg 854w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy-234x155.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/new-amsterdam-season-3-finale-iggy-570x380.jpg 570w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2028px) 100vw, 2028px\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1002420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Virginia Sherwood\/NBC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cChance made Iggy rethink his entire life,\u201d Schulner explains. \u201cThe speech that Aaron [Ginsburg] and David [Foster] wrote for him at the end, where he\u2019s looking at his family, making smores around the campfire, and realizing he doesn\u2019t want to make that trade anymore, he doesn\u2019t want to absorb other people\u2019s pain if it means sacrificing from his own joy \u2014 and because Iggy doesn\u2019t know how to be a different therapist because he can\u2019t help but opening his heart to everyone \u2014 I think he\u2019s making a really healthy decision. Why should he keep practicing and keep hurting himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s going to be easy for him to stick to that decision. On the one hand, \u201cthe peace he has with his family is everything to him,\u201d Schulner says. But on the other hand, \u201cthere\u2019s the problem of his nature,\u201d Horton adds. \u201cHis nature is to help people directly. That is who he is. It\u2019s one of the reasons that he and Martin have adopted so many kids from foreign countries because he can\u2019t help himself. He\u2019s made a conscious decision that goes against his very nature. He\u2019s determined to follow it, but those liminal conflicts where your nature is your nature and you\u2019re trying to impose a will on it eventually have to collide with each other \u2014 that\u2019s what his next season is going to be about. How does he resolve that conflict?
