“#Virginia school district commencement speaker under fire<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

A Virginia school district has gained national attention over its commencement speaker\u2019s controversial speech telling graduates they were entering a world of \u201cracism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, [and] white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Abrar Omeish, the sole Muslim member of the Fairfax County School Board in Virginia, delivered the commencement address at Justice High School in Falls Church, Va., last Monday.<\/p>\n

Her speech, first reported by the Daily Wire, began by congratulating the class of 2021 in English, Arabic and Spanish.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday we checked off a box in your academic journey. As a human being, you have developed and you have grown,\u201d she said before shifting her tone from inspirational to political.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe struggle with human greed, racism, extreme versions of individualism and capitalism, white supremacy growing wealth gaps, disease, climate crisis, extreme poverty amidst luxury and waste right next door,\u201d she told the graduates. \u201cAnd the list goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou understand that social<\/a> justice is only political for those that can afford to ignore it. You understand that \u2018neutral\u2019 is another word for complicit. And you have made a choice to take a stand,\u201d Omeish continued.<\/p>\n

The commencement speaker went on to give the graduates some advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe world may try to quiet you by deciding for you what\u2019s cool, what\u2019s weird, what is or isn\u2019t objective. It may try to convince you that what you hold dear is too different to be accepted,\u201d she said, asking, \u201cBut who gets to decide?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery part of your being may scream in rage at the ways others have wronged you,\u201d the school board member warned. Students, she continued, should \u201clet compassion for your fellow human beings, not anger or rage \u2014 and believe me, this is hard to do \u2014 fuel you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Omeish\u2019s speech was preceded by an introduction from the president of the student government. The student body president noted that their next speaker was \u201cVirginia co-chair for the Bernie Sanders campaign,\u201d as well as the daughter of Esam Omeish, \u201cleader and a board member of the Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center [who] raised his daughter to be an outspoken woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center, a mosque, was attended by two of the Sept. 11 hijackers, the radical imam Anwar Al-Awlaki and Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.<\/p>\n

The high school did not immediately respond to Fox News<\/a>\u2019 request for comment.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the network\u2019s \u201cFox & Friends\u201d Tuesday morning<\/a>, former Wall Street Journal columnist Asra Nomani called Omeish\u2019s speech \u201cdepressing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just really depressing. It was indicative of this radicalization that is happ<\/a>ening within school boards and school districts and schools across the country, from principals to teachers to political operatives like [Omeish],\u201d the former columnist said.<\/p>\n

She added that she knew Omeish \u201cvery well\u201d and both were Muslims.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe gave that speech but the script was written years ago.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
