A street artist known for drawing chalk hearts on New York City\u2019s sidewalks died after he jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge on Friday, friends told The Post.<\/p>\n

Hash Halper, 41, was an old-school Big App<\/a>le bohemian carrying on a downtown pop art tradition with his hearts of various sizes and colors, his friend Sarah Frances said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe really just wanted to spread the message of love,\u201d she said, calling Halper\u2019s death a terrible loss for the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis soul was in spreading positive energy and love, which is why this is a tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frances\u2019 sister, Michelle Rose, said the hearts were like Halper \u201cstamping his magnetic charm\u201d around the city. It was no accident he used chalk for the hearts because it was childlike \u2014 and he knew nothing lasted or stayed the same, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone felt like they were stumbling into something that was whimsical but also something that moved around and was never the same and would disappear,\u201d Rose said.<\/p>\n

Halper started drawing the hearts in 2014, when he worked at Kossar\u2019s Bagels & Bialys on the Lower East Side.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe reason I started drawing hearts all over the city is because I fell in love with a woman,\u201d he told The New York Times<\/a> in a 2018 interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to infuse that romance into the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Halper grew up in a modern Orthodox family and said in a 2019 Medium interview<\/a> that he had always had an affinity for chalk.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn school, even in college, I would raise my hand to go up the board to write in chalk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Chalk and a canvas of sidewalk also kept him out of cuffs.<\/p>\n

Although the artist had been arrested for graffiti a few times, friends said.<\/p>\n

His sidewalk art also drew questions from cops, according to the Times. That made him engage in discussion with the officers about their emotional wellbeing.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Why are you so upset about a heart?\u2019\u201d he said, according to the Times.<\/p>\n

Halper, on his New York Romantic Instagram page<\/a>, had posted messages against anti-Semitism. His last solo show was Thursday, the day before his death, posts on the page showed.\n <\/div>\n
