{"id":27568,"date":"2020-07-15T07:01:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T04:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/jose-corona-reopens-nyc-barbershop-with-a-few-modifications\/"},"modified":"2020-07-15T07:01:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T04:01:00","slug":"jose-corona-reopens-nyc-barbershop-with-a-few-modifications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/jose-corona-reopens-nyc-barbershop-with-a-few-modifications\/","title":{"rendered":"#Jose Corona reopens NYC barbershop \u2014 with a few modifications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Jose Corona reopens NYC barbershop \u2014 with a few modifications<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                        Let\u2019s hope he\u2019s the only corona that makes a comeback.<\/p>\n<p>Jose Corona, 46, said he\u2019s relieved to reopen his Jackson Heights barbershop \u2014 both for himself and the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe barbershop is a part of the community where people come to get a haircut, some advice, or just someone to talk to,\u201d he said. \u201c[Before coronavirus] people would be hanging out, shooting the s\u2013t and drinking a beer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His regulars at Corona Barbershop Plus have missed that, as well as his expertise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbershops are an essential thing to someone\u2019s look. It makes you feel fresher or cleaner, like back to life. You\u2019re not looking like a hobo,\u201d said Roger Velasquez, 41, who has been getting his hair trimmed by Corona for 22 years. Returning for a fresh cut, he said, \u201cit feels like things are getting back to normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corona admitted, however, that things aren\u2019t quite the way they were.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusiness is okay, but I wouldn\u2019t say it\u2019s back to normal,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s found a creative way to protect his customers and employees: installing $1,300 worth of dividers to isolate each of the seven chairs. Otherwise, the barbers would have had to stagger their schedules in order to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly distance, further hurting their income.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15960971\"><img alt=\"Jose Corona, owner of Corona Barbershop Plus, gives a haircut after his shop reopened.\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Corona, whose barbershop of 19 years reopened in Phase Two, gives a haircut amid plastic dividers.<\/span><span>Annie Wermiel\/NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Corona is proud that he\u2019s been able to bring back all six subcontracted barbers, especially since his landlord declined to give him a $500 reduction on his $4,500 monthly rent payment during the four months the shop was closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI filed for free food and unemployment, and that helped me a little bit,\u201d said Corona, who also received an SBA loan. \u201cThat was some sense of relief. It was very frustrating, the uncertainty of not knowing if things would even go back to normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To help cover the additional costs \u2014\u00a0including $400 for a professional cleaner to disinfect the shop before reopening, a practice he plans to continue every month \u2014\u00a0Corona raised the price of haircuts by $5. The haircut prices are staggered by age. Kids, young adults and adult shears are now $20, $25 and $30, respectively.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15960985\"><img alt=\"Barbers give haircuts at Corona Barbershop Plus in Jackson Heights\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Corona has been able to hire back all six of his barbers even though COVID-19 shuttered the shop for four months.<\/span><span>Annie Wermiel\/NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re wearing facial masks and gloves, have hand sanitizer as soon as you come in, and have thermometers to take people\u2019s temperatures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He opened his shop in 2001, about four years after giving his first cut.<\/p>\n<p>It all started after Corona \u2014 who described himself as a \u201chothead\u201d in his youth \u2014 was fired from a maintenance company. He was hanging out at a barbershop run by his cousin, when a friend ran in needing a quick clean-up. But all the professional barbers were with other customers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Just grab the clippers and clean the back of my neck real quick,\u2019\u201d Corona said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15960998\"><img alt=\"Corona Barbershop Plus is not cutting beards at the moment so customers can keep their masks on the entire time. \" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Corona Barbershop Plus has put its beard-grooming services on hold so customers can keep their masks on the entire time they\u2019re in the chairs.<\/span><span>Annie Wermiel\/NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From there, he started to work for his cousin, learning the trade for a year before he and another barber were \u201clet go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe [other] barber opened a shop a few blocks away and I went to work for him for three years,\u201d Corona said.<\/p>\n<p>But that damaged his relationship with his cousin, who didn\u2019t speak to him until tragedy brought them together in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe finally spoke at my mother\u2019s funeral. He told me his shop was for sale and he was moving to Florida,\u201d Corona said. \u201cI had some money put away, and my father was able to loan me some money. (The shop has a robust Instagram following.) Still, Corona managed to sneak in a favor or two for his regulars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did a private haircut on a rooftop since he wasn\u2019t able to open the shop \u2014 more of like the friends and family kind of thing,\u201d Velasquez said. \u201cHe spaced it out so nobody else was on the roof besides me and him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corona is very ready for things to truly return to normal, but says he sees that his customers still have pain to work through \u2014\u00a0and he\u2019s h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y to give them a place to do it with friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are traumatized.\u201d Now, he said, \u201cIt\u2019s not that [the old barbershop culture] is not still going on somewhat, but it\u2019s not the same. When you have a lot of people together, you\u2019re going to hear of a lot of people who died.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15961017\"><img alt=\"Jose Corona\" data- data- height=\"441\" width=\"662\"><\/img><figcaption><span>Corona said he won\u2019t change the name of his barbershop, even though it shares the name of the virus that has caused him so many setbacks.<\/span><span>Annie Wermiel\/NY Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For now, Corona added, face masks dampen some of the normal chatter, especially as beard grooming \u2014 formerly an in-demand service \u2014 is not allowed.
