“#Anne Hathaway was not the first pick for ‘The Devil Wears Prada’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

It\u2019s difficult to picture anyone other than Anne Hathaway playing the role of overworked assistant Andy Sachs in the now-iconic movie, \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada.\u201d But the Oscar winner was not 20th Century Fox\u2019s first choice.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s cast gathered virtually for a 15-year reunion with Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, where it was revealed that actress Rachel McAdams was actually the first choice for the role of Andy.<\/p>\n

Director David Frankel said that prior to casting Hathaway, the studio initially wanted to cast a well-known actress to play the part. McAdams turned it down three times. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe studio was very determined to have Rachel star in that movie,\u201d Frankel said during the online gathering. \u201cAnd she was very determined not to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hathaway wasn\u2019t just the backup actress, either. She revealed on a February episode of \u201cRuPaul\u2019s Drag Race\u201d<\/a> that she was the ninth choice to play Andy.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt spoke to me. It made me feel. It was about a subject that I take very seriously, but in such a wonderfully joyful and lighthearted way,\u201d Hathaway said of her character.<\/p>\n

More commercial actresses such as Kirsten Dunst, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and Kate Hudson\u00a0were discussed for the part, Frankel said during the reunion. Despite not having the studio\u2019s interest at first, Hathaway knew the role would put her on the map.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just kind of knew that it was the place to be, so I very patiently waited until it was my turn, and I got the call. It was the easiest yes in the world,\u201d Hathaway said during the reunion. <\/p>\n

In fact, Meryl Streep, who famously portrayed Miranda Priestly, had a hand in helping Hathaway secure the part.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeryl was eager to make the movie, and she said \u2018Let me meet with her,\u2019 \u201d Frankel told Entertainment Weekly. \u201d \u2018Brokeback Mountain\u2019\u00a0was about to come out. Annie had a wonderful, small role in that. And Meryl watched that scene from the movie, she met with her and called up Tom Rothman at Fox and said, \u2018Yeah, this girl\u2019s great, and I think we\u2019ll work well together.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

Hathaway reflected back on actually scoring the gig. \u201cI remember the moment I found out I got the part: I just ran screaming through my apartment,\u201d she said. \u201cI had a bunch of friends over at the time. I just jumped up in the living room and screamed, \u2018I\u2019m going to be in \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada!\u201d \u2018 I just had a feeling that it was gonna be huge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adrian Grenier, who played Andy\u2019s boyfriend Nate, called the film, based on Lauren Weisberger\u2019s novel about her stint as Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour\u2019s real-life assistant, \u201ca huge monstrous success.\u201d And it was, bringing in $326.7 million worldwide at the box office.<\/p>\n

The casting choice wasn\u2019t the only revelation to come from the reunion. Frankel said the possibility of a sequel was briefly discussed, but the decision was ultimately thwarted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had one phone call, where we said \u2018What could we do if there were a sequel?\u2019 \u201d Frankel said. \u201cAnd maybe it was stupid, we really felt like, \u2018No! This story has been told.\u2019 \u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
