none\"><em>NerdWallet<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p> With a large fan base and critical acclaim, Brandi Carlile exudes success.\u00a0Her seven albums of music span several genres, including pop, folk and rock, giving her a wide audience <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal, and she has been the recipient of six Grammy Awards and 12 nominations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       But in her new memoir, \u201cBroken Horses,\u201d she reveals that she has a tendency to spend money as soon as she gets it, which means she often finds herself running out of cash. Her song lyrics also touch on this topic.<\/p>\n<p>In one of her biggest hits, \u201cThe Story,\u201d she sings, \u201cEven when I was flat broke, you made me feel like a million bucks.\u201d The idea that you can feel a lot richer than your bank account suggests is a recurring theme in her memoir, too.<\/p>\n<p>In her book, Carlile shares some of her hard-won personal finance lessons, and what the rest of us can learn from her experiences. Here are five of her financial takeaways.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Know_what_you_want\"><\/span>Know what you want<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Carlile describes growing up in relative poverty, with her family facing frequent evictions and job shifts. \u201cI can recall the name of just about every landlord who evicted us and my parents\u2019 list of grievances against them. I also remember every helping hand,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n<p>That poverty taught Carlile to be ready to express exactly what she wanted on the rare occasion that she was asked. After a childhood illness left her hospitalized and her grandmother told her she would buy her whatever she wanted as she recovered, Carlile responded quickly: She wanted a Rainbow Brite doll and a \u201creally big tomato.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carlile calls her response \u201cPoor Kid Survival 101.\u201d In other words, \u201cYou gotta know what you want and don\u2019t hesitate to ask for it, or you won\u2019t get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check out: <\/strong>These are the 8 most popular books about money and investing ever<\/p>\n<p>Jason Dall\u2019Acqua, a certified financial planner and president of Crest Wealth Advisors in Annapolis, Maryland, says that\u2019s an important lesson to apply to everyday budgeting, too. \u201cBudgeting is about determining what is important to you and what you value, and then aligning that to your financial resources to make sure you are working toward what you want out of life,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Appreciate_what_you_have\"><\/span>Appreciate what you have<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Carlile recalls that one Christmas, her parents managed to buy her a Casio<br \/>\n        CSIOY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206719136\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.87%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       keyboard, despite its $80 price tag. She knew it was a stretch for them, and she appreciated their sacrifice. \u201cIt was my prized possession,\u201d she writes, adding that she used it to learn how to play every song from the \u201cPhiladelphia\u201d movie soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re always looking for the next best thing without appreciating what you have, then the next thing isn\u2019t going to satisfy you either,\u201d says Dall\u2019Acqua.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Buy_the_house_that_makes_you_happy_within_reason\"><\/span>Buy the house that makes you happy (within reason)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Carlile writes that one of her early dreams was to live in a log cabin on a creek; she bought a property that fit that description in her early 20s and still lives there today with her growing family. She continues to make\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/loans\/personal-loans\/finance-popular-home-upgrades?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1015170&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">home improvements\u00a0<\/a>around the property, including building a garden and renovating a greenhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReal estate is a great asset to own, and for a lot of people, it\u2019s their largest financial asset,\u201d says Dall\u2019Acqua. \u201cJust don\u2019t reach for more than you can afford.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sometimes_its_OK_to_splurge\"><\/span>Sometimes, it\u2019s OK to splurge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Carlile is not ashamed of her spurges; in fact, she\u2019s proud of them, especially when they contribute to her happiness or that of her fans or family. She spends money on her onstage outfits, she explains, as a matter of respect for her audience: \u201cIt\u2019s not about having fancy clothes and being rich; it\u2019s about communicating to the crowd that you understand the evening is special for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the pandemic, she bought a fishing boat, explaining that she\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/article\/loans\/personal-loans\/the-best-ways-to-borrow-money?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1015170&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">financed it<\/a>\u00a0to help assure her wife it was within their budget, especially since her income took a steep nosedive as the pandemic set in and forced tour cancellations.<\/p>\n<p>That boat, Carlile explains, is helping to create incredible memories as she and her family, including two young daughters, spend time on it, fishing and camping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also read: <\/strong>Use these powerful tools to strike the right money tone with your kids<\/p>\n<p>The spirit of splurging also applies to Carlile\u2019s generosity toward those close to her. In a recent Instagram post to celebrate the singer\u2019s 40th birthday, her wife, Catherine Shepherd, wrote, \u201cYou order the entire menu for the whole table and you always pay the bill and tip three times as much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as you build splurging into your budget and there is thought behind the purchase, there\u2019s nothing wrong with it. You have to enjoy the short-term while making smart decisions for the long-term,\u201d says Dall\u2019Acqua.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Money_can_suddenly_run_out_and_you_have_to_adapt\"><\/span>Money can suddenly run out, and you have to adapt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Carlile writes openly about the sudden\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nerdwallet.com\/l\/covid19-guide?utm_campaign=ct_prod&amp;utm_content=1015170&amp;utm_medium=wire&amp;utm_source=syndication&amp;utm_term=anne-stanleymarketwatch-com\" class=\"icon none\">impact of the pandemic<\/a>\u00a0on her ability to make a living. \u201cTouring was the only way for an artist to earn a living \u2026 It went away in an instant,\u201d she writes. She started looking for alternatives, including streaming performances online. She\u2019s grappling with its impact on her industry and her own career, as so many of her fans are, too.
