\n Viacom tapp<\/a>ed noted publisher Jonathan Karp to take over the Simon & Schuster book division that had been headed by Carolyn Reidy until her sudden death of a heart attack earlier this month.<\/p>\n

While the company insider with a proven record for picking bestsellers should help to steady the ship at the 96-year-old publishing giant, there is also much uncertainty since the parent company announced earlier this year that it planned to sell the book division.<\/p>\n

Karp, who jumped to S&S in 2010 from Hachette, had been president and publisher of the Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing, which in addition to the flagship S&S imprint includes Scribner, Atria Books, Avid Reader Press, and Gallery Books.<\/p>\n

The appointment is effective immedia<\/a>tely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a surprise,\u201d said one publishing veteran at a rival house. \u201cWhile Carolyn didn\u2019t expect to die, she probably would have retired in the next few years and was grooming him. The big question is what happens when it gets sold?\u201d<\/p>\n

Added an exec at another publishing house, \u201cHe finally got what\u00a0 he wanted, he\u2019s joining a very select group of\u00a0 global book publishing CEOs. We\u2019ll see how long he has the opportunity to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The book industry has rapidly shrunk over the past decade as a dozen big book publishers have consolidated into a Big Five. In addition to S&S, the Big Five include Penguin Random House (owned by Germany\u2019s Bertelsmann), HarperCollins (owned by News<\/a> Corp., which also owns the Post), Macmillan (Germany\u2019s von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group), and Hachette Books (France\u2019s Lagard\u00e8re Publishing).<\/p>\n

Among the big five, Harper Collins and News Corp. have been said to be considering Simon & Schuster\u2019s book division. Viacom was reportedly looking for up to $1.2 billion for the book publisher, which had posted ebitda of $147 million in revenue of $814 million in 2019.<\/p>\n

During his tenure at S&S, Karp oversaw the publication of a string of bestsellers including \u201cSteve Jobs\u201d by Walter Isaacson, \u201cWhat Happened\u201d by Hillary Clinton, \u201cFear\u201d by Bob Woodward, \u201cFrederick Douglass\u201d by David Blight, \u201cBorn to Run\u201d by Bruce Springsteen, \u201cIn One Person\u201d by John Irving and the \u201cLibrary Book\u201d by Susan Orlean.<\/p>\n

His stable of pop culture authors also includes NFL quarterback Tom Brady, late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert, comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.<\/p>\n

Despite the coronavirus pandemic that has shuttered many Barnes & Noble stores and indie booksellers, Karp said online sales plus ebooks and audio books are all showing increases. \u201cWe think 2020 is going to be a great year for S&S,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s betting big on four political blockbusters. Sean Hannity\u2019s \u201cLive Free or Die\u201d hits in August, the same month that CNN\u2019s Brian Stelter\u2019s \u201cHoax\u201d is released and one month before the publication of Bob Woodward\u2019s still untitled sequel to \u201cFear.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still on tap is a tome by Trump\u2019s former National Security advisor John Bolton, \u201cThe Room Where Happened,\u201d tentatively set for a June 23 publication date, but still awaiting official clearance by federal agencies.<\/p>\n

Earlier in his career at Hachette, he oversaw his own imprint, Twelve, which published bestsellers including \u201cGod Is Not Great\u201d by Christopher Hitchens and \u201cWar\u201d by Sebastian Junger. At Random House, where he began his career and rose to editor-in-chief, he oversaw \u201cFaith of My Fathers,\u201d by John McCain and longtime collaborator Mark Salter, who followed him to S&S. He also discovered Laura Hillenbrand and her best-selling \u201cSeabiscuit.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
