If you answered \u201cno\u201d to that question, you probably don\u2019t work in marketing or journalism.<\/p>\n<p>Google News is among the largest traffic drivers for online news sources and it plays a huge role in our day-to-day lives.<\/p>\n<p>Think about it. Let\u2019s say you\u2019re a reporter who writes about barns. You <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> the countryside looking for the most interesting barns and you write barn stories.<\/p>\n<p>When people search Google News for the word \u201cbarn,\u201d you\u2019d probably hope it surfaced your work.<\/p>\n<p>And if the barn beat was as competitive as, say, the artificial intelligence beat, you\u2019d probably expect space in the Google News feed to be equally competitive. Or maybe you\u2019d figure some big time barn news outlet was gaming the algorithm or buying priority.<\/p>\n<p>Folks. Because Google News is obviously pulling the words \u201cArsenal\u201d and \u201cqueer\u201d from our author profiles.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img articles to surface based on author profiles, but it sort of makes sense and adds up. Puzzle solved right?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrong_The_puzzle_is_not_solved\"><\/span>Wrong. The puzzle is not solved<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>My author profile (which is hosted on TNW\u2019s website and has nothing to do with Google) also says I cover cannabis, politics, and gaming.<\/p>\n<p>But when I search for \u201cartificial intelligence cannabis\u201d I get no hits. If I search for \u201cartificial intelligence politics\u201d I get one and changing it to \u201cartificial intelligence gaming\u201d nets me a whopping three pieces.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s where things get interesting. If I search for \u201cAI queer\u201d the number of my articles that surfaces drops to 21, but if I search for \u201cartificial intelligence pronouns\u201d it leaps to 44 out of 120.<\/p>\n<p>The Google News algorithm apparently pulls information from my profile, but it associates me with AI and queerness more so than any other combination of keywords or any singular search term.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if I substitute \u201cmachine learning\u201d for \u201cartificial intelligence,\u201d a term I don\u2019t use at all in my profile, it surfaces zero results on its own and 27 results with \u201cqueer\u201d added.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_problem\"><\/span>The problem<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure how many queer AI journalists there are, but I have to believe I\u2019m not the only one. I\u2019m certainly not the only person writing about AI and queerness during Pride month.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, I don\u2019t think I could purchase a 30-40% share of the Google News search results if I wanted to. But here I sit: apparently the most popular queer AI journalist in the world if you go by Google\u2019s algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>That might sound cool, but it really sucks that my own work on queer issues in the artificial intelligence and STEM communities is being driven down in the search results by my unrelated work.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, other journalists are obviously being slighted. I don\u2019t like the way that feels. One of the stories I wrote about AI in the cannabis sector shows up if I search for \u201cAI queer,\u201d but it doesn\u2019t show up if I search for \u201cAI cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear that my TNW author profile plays a large role in how Google News treats my work, but it\u2019s also evident that the words \u201cqueer\u201d and \u201cpronouns\u201d play a much larger role than any others when it comes to surfacing my work.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the day, none of this makes me feel good. We all want our work judged for its content. Having an algorithm apparently associate everything I do with queerness is weird and off-putting.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more to me as a journalist than my queerness. And it does a disservice to both the queer and artificial intelligence communities when the algorithm surfaces my unrelated writings on, for example, quantum physics and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> when someone searches for \u201cAI queer,\u201d instead of important stories from reporters about LGBTQPIA+ issues in the STEM sectors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
