Just in time for Independence Day.<\/p>\n

Capitol Hill lawmakers said Wednesday that UFOs could pose a pressing threat to America\u2019s national security, as the pols emerged from a highly classified briefing with Navy and FBI officials on the unexplained phenomena.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the release of a highly anticipated Pentagon report on unidentified flying objects before month\u2019s end, members of the House Intelligence Committee received a hush-hush sneak preview inside a SCIF, or \u201csensitive compartmented information facility.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for the existence of extraterrestrial life, the lawmakers largely left the secrets inside the surveillance-proof room, declining to tell reporters what they learned.<\/p>\n

But some did voice concerns that the UFOs \u2014 which may be espionage assets controlled by America\u2019s foreign adversaries, in a possible explanation just slightly less terrifying than the vanguard of an alien invasion \u2014 could pose a danger to national security.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe take the issue of unexplained aerial phenomena seriously to the extent that we\u2019re dealing with the safety and security of US military personnel or the national security interests of the United States,\u00a0so we want to know what we\u2019re dealing with,\u201d said Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY). <\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s important to understand that there are legitimate questions involving the safety and security of our personnel, and in our operations and in our sensitive activities, and we all know that there\u2019s [a] proliferation of technologies out there,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe need to understand the space a little bit better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), \u201cYou know it\u2019s always about our safety and security \u2014 our national security is [priority] number one \u2014 and so that\u2019s really the area where we really focused on this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the committee chairman, implied that the briefing was eye-opening, but also declined to get into specifics ahead of the release of a public report.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an interesting briefing,\u201d he said. \u201cI did learn things that were certainly new to me. But I think I\u2019m going to leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Andre Carson (R-Ill.), who has been heading efforts on the UFO inquiry, said Americans should expect an eventual public hearing on the report\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to having a public hearing at some point,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean, there\u2019s some national security concerns that we want to take into consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) said that, if anything, the landmark report shows that UFOs are finally being taken seriously.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe stigma is gone,\u201d he said. \u201cNow that\u2019s as big a change in policy as I\u2019ve witnessed about this issue in my lifetime. So the fact that they are taking this sort of thing seriously for the first time, I think, is important.\u201d<\/p>\n

Referencing the 1997 sci-fi flick \u201cContact\u201d \u2014 adapted from a Carl Sagan novel \u2014 Quigley admitted that the report won\u2019t have all the answers and that some things remain unexplainable.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do they say in \u2018Contact\u2019? Occam\u2019s razor,\u201d he said. \u201cI still think that\u2019s what\u2019s real, and there are things we can\u2019t explain.\u201d<\/p>\n

But with so many mysteries of the universe still beyond human understanding, Quigley cautioned Americans against getting their hopes up for the report.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had to predict how the public will react to this, one word would be \u2018disapp<\/a>ointing,’\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Added a clearly unimpressed Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), \u201cI\u2019m not on the edge of my seat.\u201d<\/p>\n
