{"id":276652,"date":"2021-06-16T23:06:24","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T20:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/fred-mogul-sues-wnyc-for-labeling-him-a-plagiarizer\/"},"modified":"2021-06-16T23:06:24","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T20:06:24","slug":"fred-mogul-sues-wnyc-for-labeling-him-a-plagiarizer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/fred-mogul-sues-wnyc-for-labeling-him-a-plagiarizer\/","title":{"rendered":"#Fred Mogul sues WNYC for labeling him a &#8216;plagiarizer&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Fred Mogul sues WNYC for labeling him a &#8216;plagiarizer&#8217;<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A former WNYC reporter is suing the radio station claiming he was given the boot after being falsely accused of plagiarism, according to new court papers.<\/p>\n<p>Fred Mogul, an 18-year veteran of WNYC who covered healthcare and medicine, filed a defamation and wrongful termination suit on Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Court following his termination on Feb. 5.<\/p>\n<p>Mogul, 52, said he included two sentences of AP copy in a draft version of his story \u2014 not the published version, the court papers claim.<\/p>\n<p>And since the draft included a credit to AP at the bottom \u2014 and the radio station subscribed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> wire service \u2014  Mogul believed that he was following WNYC\u2019s style guide, the court documents said.<\/p>\n<p>The sentences in question were ultimately not included in the published version of the story titled \u201cCuomo Wants Rapid Testing to Reopen Sporting Events. Should he Consider COVID-Sniffing Dogs?\u201d which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/cuomo-wants-rapid-testing-reopen-sporting-events-should-he-consider-covid-sniffing-dogs\">ran on Jan. 28<\/a> on Gothamist.com. That same day, Cooper also held meetings with over 50 staffers explaining her decision to terminate Mogul, the court papers say.<\/p>\n<p>Mogul claims he was defamed when Cooper told staffers in the meeting that he\u2019d \u201csigned his name on AP copy without having AP on the byline\u201d and saying he \u201clifted another person\u2019s words.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Employees at the meeting also pointed out that it was commonplace at the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> outlet to use AP copy and credit it in the story, the filing claims.<\/p>\n<p>The suit says within a week after his termination, roughly 70 employees sent a petition to the CEO opposing the move and demanding that Mogul get his job back. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCooper summarily dismissed an 18-year veteran WNYC reporter, accusing him of plagiarism and deception, on the basis of two sentences of AP copy <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing in a draft unpublished story which he offered to rewrite which followed a link to the AP story and included an attribution tagline crediting AP, all in accordance with past practice in the WNYC Newsroom,\u201d the suit charges.<\/p>\n<p>Mogul says he doesn\u2019t have a job and he\u2019s been falsely labeled a plagiarizer.<\/p>\n<p>Mogul initially filed a summons against NYPR on May 5. His civil complaint was filed Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mogul\u2019s union also sued NYPR earlier this month claiming it violated a collective bargaining agreement by not paying Mogul severance and not going through the normal grievance procedures, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/current.org\/2021\/06\/union-files-lawsuit-against-new-york-public-radio\/\">according to a report by Current.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>WNYC and a lawyer for the radio station did not immediately return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for NYPR said, \u201cThe lawsuit is meritless and NYPR will defend itself vigorously in court proceedings.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
