As Zach Wilson\u2019s first minicamp came to an end Wednesday afternoon, Michael Carter approached Wilson while the pair left the practice field.<\/p>\n

The rookie running back had a message for his rookie quarterback.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Carter] said to me after practice today, \u2018You know what, it\u2019s hard to know sometimes if it was a good or a bad day,\u2019\u2009\u201d Wilson said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really because there\u2019s so many learning experiences, and the frustrating things are good to learn from.\u201d<\/p>\n

Using that logic, Wilson couldn\u2019t offer a specific grade for his performance this week. He insisted that the hiccups helped him become a better player.<\/p>\n

Over the past two days, though, those frustrating moments were largely few and far between. Grasping a new system and acclimating to NFL coverage schemes are often the most daunting tasks facing a rookie quarterback. So far, Wilson, taken No. 2 overall in this spring\u2019s draft, seems to be ahead of the curve \u2014 even if the reps have come in shorts, not pads.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a fast study,\u201d passing game<\/a> specialist Greg Knapp said. \u201cHe has done a good job of minimizing mistakes. You\u2019ve got to expect mistakes from anyone starting the first time in any profession. I\u2019ve seen very minimal same mistakes twice. He learns quickly from mistakes, and that is impressive to see from a young guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur: \u201cWe\u2019ve thrown a ton at him. \u2026 I thought these last two weeks have been awesome for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson likened the process to learning a foreign language. Though each practice consists of the same cycle of plays, nothing else stays the same. Wilson\u2019s days are filled with different reps, looks and defensive coverages.<\/p>\n

In college, that wasn\u2019t the case. Across three seasons at BYU, Wilson mastered the offense. Now, that familiarity is uprooted.<\/p>\n

\u201cOut here, you\u2019re always just a step slow at first,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cIt\u2019s just how fast can I get through my progressions to where I don\u2019t even have to think about it. Something\u2019s covered, I instantly know how to move on. I think that\u2019s the key.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson\u2019s on-field growth inevitably starts off the field. He has spent swaths of free time in the film room. Soon, he plans to organize throwing sessions with his receivers to get their timing and route running on the same page.<\/p>\n

The Jets won\u2019t take the field as a team again until training camp in late July. For Wilson, the break will provide plenty of time to continue his acclimation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s always something new to prepare for and get better at,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cI\u2019m just gonna make sure I\u2019m doing everything that I can to be ready once training camp runs around.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
