“#NYC’s crowded field of Dem mayoral hopefuls squabble in final debate<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Thankfully, they don\u2019t all need to get ranked.<\/p>\n

New York City\u2019s crowded field of Democratic mayoral candidates made their final pitch to voters on Wednesday night during a debate that lacked substance and was repeatedly derailed by petty squabbles.<\/p>\n

All eight City Hall hopefuls stepped on stage for the WNBC-TV event and given equal time \u2014 despite some candidates polling in the low single digits. Joining the top contenders were ex-Citigroup executive Ray McGuire, former federal housing director Shaun Donovan and non-profit leader Dianne Morales.<\/p>\n

The showdown \u2014 the last ahead of the ranked-choice voting primary on June 22 \u2014 left little room for the leading candidates to interact and allowed the others to waste time on attacking each other.<\/p>\n

One fracas emerged while McGuire and Morales were bickering over whether to slash funding from the NYPD. <\/p>\n

McGuire, a black banking exec, said that the \u201cdefund the police\u201d movement would \u201cend up in disaster for New Yorkers.\u201d Morales, who identifies as Afro Latina, shot back: \u201cYou don\u2019t speak for black and brown communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was one of several quarrels to break out during the messy two-hour match-up, which was co-hosted by Telemundo 47, Politico, Citizens Budget Commission and New York Urban League.<\/p>\n

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams \u2014 who holds a solid 11-point lead in the primary \u2014 stayed above the fray as he was targeted by several of the other contenders.<\/p>\n

Tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who landed in second place after Adams in a recent poll, hit the former police captain for failing to snag the backing of the Captains Endowment Association, the union that once represented him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people who worked with him for years, who know him best. They just endorsed me,\u201d Yang snapp<\/a>ed.<\/p>\n

Adams dismissed the attack, saying, \u201cI said, months ago, I\u2019m not taking any of the union\u2019s endorsements.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Yang lashed out at Adams again later on in the event, when the candidates were asked to name the worst policy proposed by one of their rivals. He cited the longtime Brooklyn pol\u2019s \u201cadvice to bring a firearm to church as a public safety measure.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Adams took aim at Yang\u2019s universal basic income proposal. \u201cIt went from UBI that Mr. Yang had, then it went to borough bucks, then it went to monopoly money, then it went to hope and prayer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Adams also called out lawyer and civil rights activist Maya Wiley for paying to have private security patrol her leafy Brooklyn enclave while pushing to defund the NYPD.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have a problem with safety with the private security you have on your block,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
