The young man from one of South Carolina\u2019s most prominent families who was shot dead alongside his mother had been getting a series<\/a> of threats before the double slaying, his uncles revealed in an interview Thursday.<\/p>\n

Paul Murdaugh, 22 \u2014 who was facing trial over the death of a 19-year-old girl \u2014 was shot \u201cmultiple times\u201d alongside his 52-year-old mom Margaret \u201cMaggie\u201d Murdaugh in Islandton late last Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think it was a credible threat \u2014 if it was, I would have tried to do something or notify someone,\u201d John Marvin Murdaugh told \u201cGood Morning America\u201d Thursday without elaborating on the nature of the threats.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I guess \u2026 maybe I made a mistake,\u201d he said, lowering his head in grief.<\/p>\n

Despite the threats \u2014 and Paul Murdaugh\u2019s impending legal troubles \u2014 the relatives, who are both brothers of Alex, insisted the slaughtered pair had no known enemies.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear of all this talk on the social media<\/a> with regard to Paul, but \u2014 I don\u2019t know of anybody that would truly be an enemy, or truly want to harm them,\u201d Randolph \u201cRandy\u201d Murdaugh IV, a partner with Paul\u2019s father Alex in their prominent local legal firm, insisted.<\/p>\n

The men both denied local speculation that the family had used its legal ties to help protect Paul, who was accused of drunkenly crashing a boat that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach in 2019.<\/p>\n

They also insisted that their family is being wrongly portrayed in media reports on the gruesome slaying.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeeing words like \u2018dynasty\u2019 and \u2018power\u2019 used \u2026 but we\u2019re just regular people,\u201d Randy Murdaugh insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re hurting just like they would be hurting if it happ<\/a>ened to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pair recalled getting the call from their brother breaking news<\/a> of the double slaying.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I answered the phone I knew something was wrong,\u201d John Marvin Murdaugh said wiping away tears. \u201cOh man \u2026 He just told me, \u2018Come as fast as you can \u2014 Paul and Maggie have been hurt.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Randy recalled \u201cthe fear\u201d in his brother\u2019s voice, saying, \u201cHe was just distraught.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials have said the pair were \u201cshot multiple times.\u201d Officials have not commented on local media reports that two weapons were used \u2014 a shotgun to kill the son and an assault rifle to gun down his mother.<\/p>\n

So far, no suspects or official motives have been given.<\/p>\n

The Murdaughs are one of South Carolina\u2019s most prominent legal families, with three generations having served consecutively as solicitor for the 14th Circuit.<\/p>\n

One of them, the patriarch of the family, 81-year-old Randolph Murdaugh III, had been ill prior to the shooting deaths of his grandson and daughter-in-law, and died days later.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
