Not everyone thinks this whale of a tale is a whopper.<\/p>\n

Despite getting sunk by some experts, Cape Cod lobsterman Michael Packard\u2019s story about being nearly gulped down by a humpback is getting support from local scuba divers \u2014 who insist it\u2019s not too fishy to swallow.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he\u2019s lying at all. I think it\u2019s amazing what happ<\/a>ened,\u201d Bob Peck of Adventure Diving Services of Cape Cod told Boston.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Peck, who has been a diver for almost 50 years, thinks the real-life Jonah tale was just too rare and wild for a Cape Cod Hospital emergency room doc who didn\u2019t treat Packard but dismissed his tale to The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s the doctor gonna know about the ocean? Come on now,\u201d Peck told Boston.com.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got to go to the doctor because you\u2019re sick. But you\u2019re not going to go to the doctor if you got to go catch lobsters and play with whales \u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s probably shocked,\u201d Peck added of The Post\u2019s source. \u201cAnd I\u2019m shocked, too, that he didn\u2019t get hurt more than he did,\u201d he said of his fellow diver.<\/p>\n

Don Ferris, of Don Ferris Dive Training of Cape Cod, suggested that the medic was \u201ctotally confused with that he\u2019s talking about with physics\u201d by suggesting Packard should have suffered far more serious injuries.<\/p>\n

Ferris \u2014 a diving instructor of almost four decades who has authored books about his adventures \u2014 told Boston.com that an ascension rate of 45 feet in 20 to 40 seconds \u201cis nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very survivable coming to the surface that fast as long as you\u2019re breathing out,\u201d Ferris said, suggesting that Packard\u2019s scuba equipment likely protected him against the whale\u2019s jaws.<\/p>\n

He said Packard already had two perforated eardrums from his many years underwater, explaining perhaps why he did not suffer fresh injuries.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a commercial diver, bro,\u201d Ferris told the outlet. \u201cHe\u2019s not going to have barotrauma in his ears coming up from 40 feet. It\u2019s just not a thing,\u201d he insisted of the doc\u2019s suspicion.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t see where he gains anything attention-wise by, you know, having people thrash him for lying in a bar or something,\u201d Ferris said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo yeah, I think he did have some kind of encounter \u2026 It\u2019s a pretty, pretty dangerous job that he\u2019s doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Josiah Mayo, a crewmate who was with Packard, said the local community believes his crewmate because of \u201ca code unspoken\u201d among \u201cthat sort of elite group of fishermen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey always underestimate their catch, you know, how rough it was out there, any of the drama that happens out there,\u201d Mayo insisted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it happened to some yahoo, basically, all we\u2019d be doing is arguing about whether it really happened or not. And there\u2019s been very little of that \u2014 and for obvious reasons,\u201d he said of his crewmate\u2019s respect among divers.<\/p>\n

Other experts say Packard likely only stayed in the mouth of the whale, which likely sucked him in by accident, given that humpbacks are not typically aggressive, especially toward humans. A humpback\u2019s esophagus is also too narrow to swallow a person.<\/p>\n

\u201cI imagine the whale had this, like, \u2018Oh my goodness\u2019 moment and probably got rid of him as quickly as it could,\u201d Dr. Peter Corkeron, of the New England Aquarium, told NBC 10 Boston<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Packard could not be reached for comment for the article, Boston.com said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
