Even though the Civil War had been over for two months, slavery remained in Texas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: Nearly one in four teachers say they may quit by the end of the school year \u2014 here\u2019s why<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Union <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and famously read <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.galvestonhistory.org\/news\/juneteenth-and-general-order-no-3\" class=\"icon none\">General Orders No. 3<\/a>, which stated, \u201cThe people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That day came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. Not all states im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely ended slavery when Lincoln signed the order, as it was signed in the middle of the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: One year after George Floyd\u2019s murder, fewer Americans say they support Black Lives Matter<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While other dates \u2014 such as the Confederate Army\u2019s surrender in the Civil War, the ratification of the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery, or the day Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation \u2014 could similarly be viewed as the \u201cend\u201d of slavery, Juneteenth is the day most people associate with its conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Juneteenth was made a federal holiday by Congress and President Biden \u2014 the Juneteenth holiday and will go into effect immediately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: When does the Juneteenth holiday go into effect in stock and bond markets? According to a recent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/351041\/americans-know-juneteenth-holiday.aspx?utm_source=tagrss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=syndication\" class=\"icon none\">Gallup survey<\/a>, 28% of U.S. adults say they know \u201cnothing at all\u201d about Juneteenth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: Spotify strikes $60 million podcast deal with Barstool\u2019s \u2018Call Her Daddy\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Awareness of the date also breaks along party lines. The survey found that 16% of Democrats know \u201cnothing at all\u201d about Juneteenth, compared with 45% of Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth celebrations this Saturday may include religious services, educational events, family gatherings and festivals.
