“#New Rita Moreno doc reveals suicide attempt, super-stardom<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

When film fans got their first glimpse of Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cWest Side Story\u201d remake during this year\u2019s Oscars, they heard a familiar voice singing the famous song \u201cSomewhere\u201d in the trailer: Rita Moreno.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The original Anita from 1961\u2019s \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d Moreno has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years. The EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner executive-produces and app<\/a>ears in Spielberg\u2019s film, out in December; she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor for lifetime artistic achievement in 2015 and a new documentary about her life, \u201cRita Moreno: Just a Girl who Decided to Go for It,\u201d hits theaters Friday after screening at the Tribeca Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt goes up and down,\u201d Moreno, 89, says in the doc of her eight decades in showbiz. \u201cRight now, it\u2019s up\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreno was born Rosa Alver\u00edo in Humacao, Puerto Rico, in 1931. She moved to New York City in 1936 with her divorced mother, leaving her brother behind. There, Moreno quickly found her passion \u2014 Spanish dance. At just 6, she made her debut in a Greenwich Village nightclub.<\/p>\n

\u201cI dropped out of school when I was 15, something like that, and I started to work right away,\u201d she said of her performing life.<\/p>\n

She continued dancing in late-night New York venues, when one day an MGM talent scout spotted her at a recital. Impressed, he told Moreno\u2019s mother that MGM head honcho Louis B. Mayer was in town, staying in the penthouse of the Waldorf Astoria hotel, and Rita could audition for him.<\/p>\n

The pair went to the Waldorf, where her mother stormed up to the concierge desk and said, \u201cWe have to see Louis B. Ma-jor!\u201d<\/p>\n

At the tryout, Mayer gave Moreno one look and said, \u201cMy God \u2014 she looks like a Spanish Elizabeth Taylor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a contract from that, from not doing anything,\u201d Moreno says in the documentary. \u201cHere\u2019s the funny thing \u2014 you work your ass off all your life, and then something like this happens, and it didn\u2019t take anything but a connection with somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six months later, Moreno and mom moved to Hollywood, where she was cast in a series<\/a> of embarrassing, submissive roles as native and island girls in movies, such as \u201cPagan Love Song\u201d and the musical \u201cThe King and I,\u201d in which she played Tuptim. Star Yul Brynner let her know how he felt about her part in a phone call.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know your part is very boring because you\u2019re just a soubrette [a flirty stock character],\u201d Moreno recalls him saying. \u201cAll you do is pine and look sad because you can\u2019t have your lover and that\u2019s boring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreno agreed, and her r\u00e9sum\u00e9 got a boost when she got a more substantial part opposite Gene Kelly in 1952\u2019s \u201cSingin\u2019 in the Rain.\u201d<\/p>\n

But someone came into the actress\u2019 life who nearly destroyed her: Marlon Brando<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe looked like a Greek god, for heaven\u2019s sake,\u201d she says of the \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire\u201d actor, whom she started dating in 1954. However, Brando would abuse and cheat on Moreno. He married twice during their nearly seven-year relationship, and she wrote in her memoir that she dated Elvis Presley to make him jealous. At one point, the actress became pregnant with Brando\u2019s child. He got word of the news<\/a>, found a discreet abortion doctor and sent his girlfriend there \u2014 but the procedure was botched and Moreno bled for days.<\/p>\n

The relationship became so distressing, Moreno attempted suicide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I tried to do away with myself, I wanted to do it because I couldn\u2019t take the pain anymore of the relationship I had with Marlon Brando,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was humiliating and I was letting him step all over me. And I hated myself so much \u2014 it was a very strange reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to get rid of myself because I don\u2019t think I deserved to live. And I took the pills.\u201d<\/p>\n

She survived, and just seven years later worked in a movie with Brando again, \u201cThe Night of the Following Day.\u201d In one scene, the actor slaps her character across the face.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat opened an old scar of when he would take advantage of me, when he had other women,\u201d she says. \u201cPond scum came to the surface, and I started screaming at him \u2014 and they never stopped filming. The director loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Moreno is best remembered for her Oscar-winning role in \u201cWest Side Story.\u201d She thinks back fondly to the night she beat Judy Garland (\u201cJudgment at Nuremberg\u201d) and Lotte Lenya (\u201cThe Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone\u201d) to win Best Supporting Actress.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen [Rock Hudson] called my name out, the place went crazy. Latinos were sticking their heads out the window, screaming, \u2018She did it! She did it!,\u2019 \u201d she said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
