{"id":278030,"date":"2021-06-17T21:19:41","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T18:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/fire-ravaged-ship-sinks-off-sri-lanka-prompting-pollution-fears\/"},"modified":"2021-06-17T21:19:41","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T18:19:41","slug":"fire-ravaged-ship-sinks-off-sri-lanka-prompting-pollution-fears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/fire-ravaged-ship-sinks-off-sri-lanka-prompting-pollution-fears\/","title":{"rendered":"#Fire-ravaged ship sinks off Sri Lanka, prompting pollution fears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Fire-ravaged ship sinks off Sri Lanka, prompting pollution fears<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>COLOMBO, Sri Lanka \u2014 A container ship carrying chemicals sank off Sri Lanka\u2019s capital on Thursday nearly a month after catching fire, raising concerns about a possible environmental disaster.<\/p>\n<p>The ship\u2019s operator said the wreck of the Singapore-flagged X-Press Pearl \u201cis now wholly sitting on the seabed at a depth of 70 feet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A salvage crew was at the site to deal with any debris and report any spill, said the operator, X-Press Feeders.<\/p>\n<p>The head of Sri Lanka\u2019s Marine Environment Protection Authority, Darshani Lahandapura, said the ship had sunk, adding that it will likely be unsafe to do much about it for some time because of rough monsoon seas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sea is very violent. But debris including burned fiberglass and tons of plastic pellets have already polluted nearby beaches. There are concerns that a spill of remaining chemicals and oil from the ship could devastate marine life.<\/p>\n<p>The main concern has been about 300 tons of bunker oil used as fuel for the ship.
