\u201cInside No. 9\u201d is back for another genre-bending season of heavy-meta humor and dark, psychological drama \u2014 a recipe that\u2019s earned British co-creators Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton international acclaim (and a slew of awards).<\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought, \u2018If \u201cInside No. 9\u2033 is not bold and challenging, if it becomes safe\u2026then we\u2019ve lost what was innovative about it in the first place,\u201d Shearsmith told The Post as the series<\/a> returns for its sixth season Tuesday (June 22) on BritBox. \u201cWe never want the audience to feel comfortable tuning in and feeling like they know what to expect. That gets harder and harder the more we write, but that\u2019s our ethos: keep surprising the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

That certainly applies to the Season 6 opener, \u201cWuthering Heist,\u201d which melds elements of commedia<\/a> dell\u2019arte with heist-genre tropes as a gang of mask-wearing criminals \u2014 including Scaramouche (Shearsmith) and The Doctor (Pemberton) \u2014 plan a diamond heist. The characters (cast members include Kevin Bishop and Gemma Whelan, aka Yara Greyjoy from \u201cGame<\/a> of Thrones\u201d) drop references to Queen\u2019s \u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d the BBC\/Amazon series \u201cFleabag,\u201d Bob Geldof, BBC2 and even the episode\u2019s script<\/a> (\u201cIt\u2019s from the subplot so it might not be important.\u201d) Sharp-eyed viewers will recognize elements from big-screen movies including \u201cReservoir Dogs,\u201d \u201cDead Presidents\u201d and \u201cThe Town\u201d as the story mixes dashes of slapstick and clever wordplay.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is probably the one [episode] that felt very different and irreverent to\u2026talk about \u2018Inside No. 9\u2019 and its popularity on television in territories around the world,\u201d Shearsmith said. \u201cThat was the most meta we\u2019ve been \u2014 aside from the live episode we did where we played ourselves doing a live episode on TV and it went wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the initial impetus [for the episode] came from the commedia dell\u2019arte,\u201d he said. \u201cMask-wearing characters is something we studied at college\u2026so it was really appealing to tell a story using stock characters with masks on. We were worried it would be too theatrical and off-putting, so it was like, \u2018What\u2019s the context for having these characters with masks on?\u2019 and we somehow ended up at heist movies.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t do this [type of episode] very often because I think it very quickly looks like a last resort that you\u2019ve run out of ideas and storytelling you\u2019ve started to turn on yourself\u2026and it can appear to be indulgent. We\u2019ve got to use it sparingly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shearsmith points to successive episode as examples of changing the pace of \u201cInside No. 9.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wrote a very sparse, almost \u201970s-movie kind of episode called \u2018Lip Service\u2019 with two people [played by Shearsmith and Pemberton] in a grubby hotel room looking out of their window with binoculars,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we did an episode called \u2018Simon Says,\u2019 about a showrunner and writer of a successful TV series that comes to an end. The fans don\u2019t really like the way he ended it and one of them persuades him to write a new ending. That was largely inspired by what happened with \u2018Game of Thrones.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Co-stars this season include Sian Clifford (\u201cFleabag\u201d), Adrian Dunbar (\u201cLine of Duty\u201d), Derek Jacobi and Julian Glover. <\/p>\n

\u201cInside No. 9,\u201d which was renewed for a six-episode seventh season, will go back into production in August.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hear that more and more actors are fans of the show and are putting in a call to their agent when they hear we\u2019re casting,\u201d Shearsmith said. \u201cI guess [the series] now has its own momentum and cachet. Being actors ourselves, we know what it\u2019s like to read a script and quickly turn to the page your character is on and think, \u2018Why would I want to do this?’\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
