Boeing\u2019s\u00a0737\u00a0Max 10, the largest member of its best-selling single-aisle airplane family, took off on its maiden flight on Friday from a Seattle-area airport, according to a Reuters witness.<\/p>\n

The plane departed at 10:07 a.m. PDT from the Renton Municipal airport near Seattle, presaging months of testing and safety certification work before it is expected to enter service in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In an unusual departure from the PR buzz surrounding first flights, the event was being kept deliberately low-key as\u00a0Boeing\u00a0tries to navigate overlapp<\/a>ing crises caused by the 20-month grounding in the wake of two crashes and the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Boeing\u2019s 230-seat\u00a0737-10 is designed to close the gap between its 178-to-220-seat\u00a0737-9, and Airbus\u2019 185-to-240-seat A321neo, which dominates the top end of the narrowbody jet market, worth some $3.5 trillion over 20 years.<\/p>\n

However, the market opportunity for the\u00a0737\u00a0MAX 10 is constrained by the jet\u2019s range of 3,300 nautical miles (6,100 km), which falls short of the A321neo\u2019s 4,000 nm.<\/p>\n

Boeing\u00a0must also complete safety certification of the plane under a tougher regulatory climate following two fatal crashes of a smaller\u00a0737\u00a0MAX version grounded the model for nearly two years \u2013 with a safety ban still in place in China.<\/p>\n

Boeing\u00a0has carried out design and training changes on the MAX family, which returned to US operations in December.<\/p>\n

While the smaller MAX 8 is\u00a0Boeing\u2019s fastest-selling jet, slow sales of the MAX 9 and 10 models have put\u00a0Boeing\u00a0at a disadvantage to the A321neo.<\/p>\n

Boeing\u00a0has abandoned plans to tinker with the\u00a0737\u00a0MAX 10 design, but is weighing a bolder plan to replace the single-aisle 757, which overlaps with the top end of the MAX family.<\/p>\n

Even so,\u00a0Boeing\u00a0says it is confident in the MAX 10 and it is stepping up efforts to sell more of the jet, with key targets including Ireland\u2019s Ryanair.<\/p>\n

Customers include United Airlines with 100 on order. Although sources say United is weighing a new order for at least 100 or even up to 200 MAX, its requirement for large single-aisles will be served by Airbus \u2013 reinforcing the market split.<\/p>\n

Friday\u2019s flight will showcase a revamped landing gear system illustrating an industry battle to squeeze as much mileage as possible out of the current generation of single-aisles.<\/p>\n

It raises the landing gear\u2019s height during take-off and landing, a design needed to compensate for the MAX 10\u2019s extra length and prevent the tail scraping the runway on take-off.<\/p>\n

Separately, British authorities said they had launched an investigation after the nose gear of a British Airways\u00a0Boeing\u00a0787 used for freight collapsed while on the tarmac at London\u2019s Heathrow on Friday. Nobody was hurt.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
